My exhaust is TOO LOUD! Suggestions?

Here's the deal. I have a mild 305 TPI IROC with Crane Compucam, ported stock heads, etc. My exhaust consists of Edelbrock TES, Dynomas 3 inch cat, 3 inch cat-back to a Flowmaster muffler.

I'm not sure what Flowmaster I have, but it has dual outlets, one on each side, as per the stock configuration.

Well, my car is very LOUD! I think it's upsetting the neighbours too When I get on the juice, it really barks. Also, it's hard for me to hear the radio, unless I turn it way up high.

Can you guys recommend an aftermarket muffler that will be a bit quieter than the Flowmaster? I still want my car to have a nice tone that ppl notice, but right now it is just too damn loud.

Thanks......
Jim.

Dynomax is pretty quiet...while still sounding good and flowing well.

The dual outlet flowmasters are known to be loud ... that's why they are included in their "American Thunder" system

You might want to consider installing the muffler that FM provides with their other kits. Its a simple 3"in/3"out muffler.

get the hooker aero chamber muffler. that is what im planning on getting in a week or 2. they say they are 80dB's and flowmasters are 90dB's. so you still have a good sound but its not too loud.. go to http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin...cts/ES/ES.html ... then go to mufflers, then go to aero chamber and they got the specs there... and if you go down more you can go to GM specific fit to get the one you need.. they might also have them at www.jegs.com

Well, I have 3 stock mufflers sitting around if you want on. 1 from my car, 1 from my friends 85 TA, and 1 from another friends 84 Z28. We all ripped them off because we like it loud!

I had a buddy that had similar problem, but not 3rd gen (Checy truck)... We added a 3" short glasspack (very cheap, too) after the cat/before the muffler. Sounded pretty cool and definately different. Kinda sounds like a Ducati motorcycle... Definately quiter, though. You may not have room for it, huh?

Thanks for the ideas guys I am starting to get used to the noise now, it aint so bad I must be an old fart or something, I never thought that any car of mine would be too loud!

Anyway, I'll leave it like it is for now, maybe get a bigger radio

What kind of exhaust do you have?

I like it loud too...

right now, i have a 3 inch pipe, no cat, and the flowmaster 80 series...

how can i get it louder and meaner sounding?

I was thinking about adding a little glasspack where the cat used to be just to change the sound a little, but the thing is i want it loud....

Is there another muffler i should try?

Thanks

Gary

The muffler in my Hooker cat back system sounds great, its not too loud (course I have the stock cam) but yet its not too quiet. Its of the family of the Aerochamber mufflers.

I'm surprised you find it loud. I've got a 3" dynomax cat on my car, and I was shocked when I pulled the exhaust off and it was almost no louder. Because of it, I'm planning to run a 3" intermediate pipe to a split in the back and 2 tail pipes. No muffler.

See if someone makes an Australian Thunder system. I hear water goes down the drain the other way, and exhaust is a few db louder in the southern hemisphere.
