Possible to open up Hedman y-pipe?

Okay, I confess, I'm stupid and got the hooker cat back for an LG4 code H, and would like to open it up. That looks simple, merely cutting and welding. But I have the Hedman 2.5" y-pipe and I fell that is holding me back. How difficult is it to weld that and custom fab up some pipe. Do I have to go to an exhaust shop or is this something I can do with a welder and some pipe? I need to have a space in the middle for the emmisions time cat, so a solid pipe is kinda out. Also do you guys think the 2.5" setup is robbing enough power to make it worth it on my car? Its a mild 350 in the sig.

I was thinking the same. If you notice there is only about 2 feet (if that) of pipe on the hedman y-pipe where both sides of the exhaust travel through. I was going to cut out that peice and replace it with a 3" pipe that way it would be two 2 1/2" pipes going into 3"

just take the ypipe to a muffler shop and have them expand the end of the pipe to 3" then weld up your hooker catback. thats what i did. i dont think it would restrict your exhaust too bad. at least not in my case.
