cops and exhaust

As a student at Rutgers University NJ, I have classes on more than 1 of the 5 local maybe a 5 mile radius). Instead of taking the bus to another campus, I decided to drive, its much quicker that way. So here i am on my way, I'm
maybe 10 mins ahead of time, so im in a good mood....ill actually be on time for class. I
had to pass through the smallest corner of a little town called Highland Park, which is one
of those towns where the cops have nothing better to do. So today, they decided to set
up a road block and do inspections. And of course the donut eater tells me to pull over...I
kindly inform him that I have an important class to attend and I will be late if I dont go
now. He tells me "I can go anywhere I please when they're done" so here i am getting
very pissed, I repeatedly tell him (getting a little more assertive each time) that i MUST
go NOW and he's making me LATE. So he tells me to step on my accelerator, and says
"my exhaust is loud and i must have a leak". I inform him that my aftermarket edelbrock
exhaust is 50 state legal and there is nothing wrong, but he gives me a ticket anyway. I
hate cops and the way they harass you...they should change their motto... "To
apprehend and harass"

Fight the ticket. Take your bill of sale and the "50 state legal" info to court. Inform the judge that "loud" isn't an acurate way of measuring noise and the cop didn't use a decible meter. Most noise bylaws are in effect from 10 pm to 8 am. During the day it would have to be excessively loud to draw attention.

Ways to get out of a ticket:

Plead not guilty. A court date is set months from now. Go to court. If the cop doesn't show up then you win. If he does show up, he may get you to plead guilty to a lesser charge to save court time. Not very likely to happen with a noise bylaw but it works for speeding tickets.

Pay the ticket. If it's $50 then send them $56. They'll send you a refund of $6 before they can cash your cheque. Post your $6 cheque on the wall and they can never cash yours.

I'm not a cop, but I have friends in law enforcement. Getting assertive with a police officer regardless of the situation will NEVER work out in your favor. Just be cool and let the officer do his/her job. In most cases if you are nice they will give you a break.

hey camaroz_85 i am a cop and i think that if u wouldnt have pushed the guy so hard that he probably would have let u off.. but from my stand point if u do fight the ticket and take the emmisions sert. with u, u should win.

Being "50 state emissions legal" is not the same as meeting a noise by-law. But, that means an accurate decibel reading... NOT a policeman's ear.

Get a decibel reading of your car and then go to court. Ask the judge "what the maximum decibel readings that are permitted under the noise by-law"? If there is no decibel specifications, then ask the judge "How can you either be in compliance or out of compliance if there is no set standard"? There has to be a standard that states the maximum noise level permitted.

But, forget the "50 state emissions certification"...it only means you aren't in violation of emission laws, not noise laws.

The overpayment trick will not work in British Columbia... they'll just cash the cheque and send you statement that you are overpaid...AND YOU will have to request the cheque for the overpaid amount.

PS: In BC, no cheques under $10.00 are mailed out. The excess under $10.00 is written off to the Finance Department.

Well, I've said it before.... the best argument for this noise thing is... WHAT ABOUT THE HARLEYS??? If They're gonna give some V8 cars a hard time, then let's get going with pulling EVERY harley on the road over and telling them they have to get big quiet mufflers on those hogs! Including the ones the COPS themselves drive! They overlook the harley aspect of it because harleys are some sort of "american pride", or something. I was driving down the highway the other day and a few Harleys went by Me in the other lane... I thought I was gonna run off the road from the noise... I mean, it was actually a dangerous situation they were causing! I got nothing at all against harley's or riders... But I don't want to hear a damn thing from a cop about MY noise levels. By the way... Harleys don't have converters OR mufflers... so, what's up with emissions, also? It's like...if it has 2 wheels then You can do whatever You want...
if it has 4, then there's all kinds of rules...What kind of V8 would it take to match the noise of a loud harley? A blown, supercharged, open header 454, or what? Sorry this went on and on... it just makes me mad.

I have a kawasaki zx7r with my baffle removed from my pipe, and its very loud. Much louder then my camaro. I have yet to get pulled over from a cop but i can tell you this much. Every single cop i drive by watches me the whole way. I love having the loud pipes, it sounds great, but it sucks because no matter how fast im going its loud and sounds like im going fast and attracts cops attention like theres no tomorrow. Im just waiting for some of my neighbors to call the cops on me for driving at 1 in the morning...lol..im sure i wake a few unfortunate souls up in the middle of the night when i get home.

I have a 98 ZX-9R with a Two Brothers RACING canister (ie it's sold as a racing only item and is not considered street legal). I bought the canister through my local Kawasaki dealer, had them install it, and got the bike inspected by them also.

As for noise, at WOT the bike can be heard over half a mile away, my friends and I have verified that. At low throttle opening/around town cruising though it's not nearly as loud, and the nice thing is partial throttle performance is still better then most 4 wheeled vehicles on the road.

I go to Rutgers as well, and Highland Park cops are *******s. They try to get me for anything they can. They haven't siad anything about my exhaust being to loud (I have no muffler) but if I have blackouts on, they will be sure to pull me over for them.

Camaro 85_Z.... email me jrshotliff@hotmail.com
I have my car at school too, and I drive to my classes as well. Maybe we could meet up sometime.
