I've got a better idea. Just unbolt the headers completely. How are you going to determine which car is the 'loudest' and why?
Are you going to use a decibel meter?
I wonder what Freud and Lacan would say about 'loudest car' contests hmmmm....

just unbolt the pipe off the bottom of your headers. if you take the headers off you are going to burn up stuff in your engine bay and also possibly burn up your valves.

the best way to do it would probly be what one of my friends did in my autos class. take off the bolts clamping the pipe to the cat, then just try getting it off. If its rusted it probly wont come off, so then youd have to cut the pipe and get a new one afterward. Besides tickets for loud exhausts are only $25 here

straight headers is the easiest way to make noise,it will make your car run poorly unless you use really high octane that day.it's also not an original idea for "loud exaust contest".
first off: make sure there is absolutly no restrictions for the intake, run an open carb... whatever.
tubular headers will help set a nice rythem.
"strait pipe" the catlyic don't use a hollow case.
at this point you may need a muffler to create backpressure, but one that still makes lots of noise like a flowmaster.or just strait pipe that part too.
the tips will have the final say on how loud the exaust noise can get my recomendation would be to find some cheapies at a parts store, the longest and largest in diameter you can find. tips of that nature would resonate some abnoxiously loud tones, a tactical move would be to position your car so there is a big wall(like the school gymnasium)behind you,to reflect noise appropriatly ,good luck
while your at it,you might as well get rear brake line cut-off valves and some meaty junkyard tires and do the worlds biggest smoke show(in OD or 5th) and post pictures on the web.....if you don't achieve first place in the exaust contest,a stunt like that would shurly earn you some recognition!

Man! I just graduated from NCHS!!!!!!!! How come they didn't have this last year???? You might have seen my car last year, it was the blue '85. I hung out with all of the other car guys, like Tyler Baker with the '94 Cobra and Joe with the '97 Z. Talk to Mr. Purtell (auto teacher) and use the lift at school to do your work. It's a lot cheaper and you learn a lot. Tell him that Jesse sent you, he should still remember me, if he doesn't tell him that I had the blue camaro.....he won't forget that(he he he)

later,
Jesse

ps there are lots of people on the boards from Naperville.(man I want ot be there right now)

And the police will also be judging all the contestants; as they leave the school parking lot.
