Flowmaster
Flowmaster
What is the difference in performance/sound between a 2-chamber and a 3-chamber Flowmaster muffler? Also, what series Flowmaster muffler is the one listed in Summit (p.n. FLO-43083) - 1982-97 Camaro/Firebird - 3" offset inlet/dual 2.5" outlets. Finally, what are the differences in sound/performance between the different series numbers. Are any of them real loud? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
I have several different flowmasters and im not sure about the exaact one u are tlking about. However for best sound and performance use a single inlet and single outlet 3 chamber. The chambers give u the sound and if your car is stock or mildly hopped up go no less than a two chamber. The chambers give the sound and they restrict cuz u have to have some back pressure for the car to run at its peak.
The muffler im talking about is about the same used on the 5.0 mustangs and it sounds great on my car. Im running this muffler 3 in. inlet and outlet with headers. If someone recommends a crossflow which is factory style dont get it it doesnt flow as good and it gives bad rattle back at higher rpm's when you back off the gas. Sorry this is a little long but maybe it helps clear up your quest.

Use the search function under exhaust, TPI, and general. There's a lot of info out there! Also the 3 chamber mufflers will produce more power and are quieter than the same size pipe 2 chamber - that's from personal experience and based on "shoot-out" articles.

Whatever you do don't get the 80 series. It gives good increase in power, but the sound you may not like. It is a very tinny hollow sound at most rpm's. I'm getting rid of mine after this year's hibernation.

Yes, some1 said a while ago that they had an L98 with no converter and they didn't like the sound and said the same thing 88, so they put a High Flow on and then it sounded really nice and didn't have the sound you are talking about with the converter on.

No Camaro I am not running a converter. Yes this may be the cause of the sound that I don't like, however, the large performance gain that I noticed once I took it off will keep me from ever putting one back on. And the only time I draw attention to the cops is when I fly by and all they see is a black streak!!
My only concern is that when I install my headers in the spring will I lose torque because I have no converter?? Anyone experience that??

speed88 i dont think u will loose much torque with the 350 and headers but u will have to tune the car accordingly. U might wanna put a high flo converter back on when u get the headers. u do need some back pressure-Mike

88, a High Flow converter, not a stock converter, isn't going to do much to your car, its almost the same as not having 1, and there are many more advantages to it, such as sound and emissions.
