Should I coat the headers or not???????

I'm still waiting on a response from Jet Hot Coatings on much a coating would cost for my headers that I will be receiving sometime next week. It has almost been a week since I e-mailed them and every time I call their Tech Line there is no one EVER there to answer the damn f*cking phone. Needless to say I am very disanchanted w/ Jet Hot Coating right now.
My main question is should I even bother getting those Hooker steel headers coated or not? Thanx

I would say to get them coated I have the Edelbrock TES and when I bought them from summit in 1998 I had Summit send them directly to Jet Hot and then jet hot mailed them to me when they were done. And they still look brandy new. I can tell you the total for the coating in/out was 254.00 including 10.00 for shipping/insurance. the headers were $165 the Y pipe (2 pcs) was $79.

If no one would get pissed about you using the oven for about an hour,, you could just coat them yourself with Cermakrome and save yourself Alot of $$

One question, how the hell would I do that and w/ what materials? I could just use the oven at my work, hehe. Just curious as to how this is going to work. I'm really pissed off w/ Jet Hot b/c this the 4th day in a row that I have tried to call and still no answer. Is there any other place that coats headers?

The black paint that come on headers comes off with laquer thinner very readily.

scotch brite the bare metal down or similar abrasive (sandblast preferred method)

clean headers good and apply very light coat of cermakrome with touch up gun or airbrush

bake at 150° with oven door open for 15 mins until 'dry' then shut the door and crank the heat to 500° for an hour and viola

The drawback is smoke,,, it is a water based product so it smokes like a MF while it's curing and ventilation is a must. It's made by Tech Line and I bought mine thru JEGs. It was under $20 but is now $23 for a small bottle (6oz.),,, but you can do Alot of headers with one bottle.

JEGs

Evan at that price,,, it's still a -ssloads cheaper than jet hot and the 'thrill' of doing it yourself

I work at a grocery store and I wonder if they will get mad if I do that in their oven, hehe. I don't think that my parents would let me do that at their house, so we shall see. Thanx

Need to correct y'all on something regarding Techline coatings. If you are using the "ColorGard" or "Black Satin" coatings, they are designed to air dry(no need to apply heat). These coatings are designed to withstand temps of 2000f. The "Cermakrome"(very shiny metallic finish) must be cured at 500f and will withstand temps of 1300f.

Bitchin!!!!!!!!!! Thanx for the info. The only thing that I'm not going to like is that the inside of the headers would not be coated as well. But the outside should hold the heat in and that's all that matters right? Thanx again

These Brand New set of Super Competiton Hooker Headers that I bought are made from 16 guage steel and have strong welds that will last a long time, even under extreme climatic conditions.
Well would I still need to coat them or not? If I don't would they still be able to rust easy or no?

You are correct Mike. Even tho the metal is a good gauge,, it is still just mild steel which is prone to the enviroment and you will want something to protect them from rust. The inside is not as prone to that due to it will eventually get a 'protective' sooty coating from the exhaust gas.

I don't think anybody mentioned heat dissipation.....coated headers channel the heat away from the engine bay which helps performance and mileage. That is what convinced me. Somebody tipped me over to Paul Barry Motorsports (www.pbmotorsports.com) They always respond to their email and I have never had a problem trying to contact them to date. I was told it would take about 3 weeks to do the job, I should have my headers back within the week or so.

Wow that is a long time. I finally was able to get through w/ JET HOT and they appoligized to me and sent me a nice e-mail and all that good stuff. They are even knocking off $30 off the price of coating for me if I decide to get them coated there, so that is kinda hard to pass up. They told me that they have a 48hr turn around date for them to be coated and shipped back out.
I wonder why the other company takes 3 weeks?

Hey Pukka I like that company from what I've read. When I get all my exhaust components I'll have to give them a call, their prices are really competitive to JET HOT as well. Thanx for the link.
