I was wondering if an 86-91 catback system will fit an 82 Trans Am.

I don't see why not, only thing to check on, is the way it hooks to your cat. Or if you get a new cat, you'll be fine.
i was asked this already... the 82 system is WAY different then later thirdgen... there is 2 mufflers... and they are mounted like the C5 vettes... its very weird... i have an exact replica model... i didnt belive it at first... some guy asked me, and i said sure.. but he said the mounting is way different... i didnt belive him till i saw it under the model car.... but i would think that other ones could fit... u just would need new mounts and hangers...

What are you talking about?
The '86-'91 TPI system (heads to rear bumper) fit just fine under my '82 Camaro. Since Camaros & Birds had the same undercarriage, how exactly would this be a problem?
The previous answers were correct. Perhaps a little less time in the toy barn and a little more time in the real world is in order for Big Al.

ok, thanks for all your help everyone. I was a tad concerned because some aftermarket systems say 86-91. Thought some line might be in the way or something.

A fellow racer here named Alan has a plate on his race car that says "Al's Toy". We told him to paint "Al's Toy Barn" on the trailer (which is enclosed). We all got a kick out of it ("Toy Story II", you know). Sorry, lack of context.
My donor car V8 exhaust was routed and bolted on exactly the way the original '82 V6 exhaust bolted on. The cat bracket came from the V8 donor car, otherwise it used the same hangers. The '86-'91 TPI-type exhaust bolted on exactly like the '86 LG4 exhaust bolted on.
I can't say I've seen a bunch of '82 V8 exhaust systems, but we all know the basic undercarriage itself did not change over the years. The question about "'86-'91 TPI exhaust" comes up regularly, and the answer is always the same - it's the best single-cat type system out there, it will fit any year 3rd gen car and any year (non-LS) SBC from heads to rear bumper. Of all the times this topic has been discussed, this is the first time I've seen anyone use a model as a source of information about whether or not the system would fit.
Apologies if I offended anyone. I'm always willing to absorb new information (if it has a reliable source).

Yes the 82 do have a different exhuast setup. There are two mufflers like a C5 corvette as previously stated. I junked that setup and went with a custom made setup with a flowmaster 80. An aftermarket setup should work if it connects to the cat correctly.

Was that a LU5-only setup, by any chance? I.E., LG4 and V6 had the "typical" cross flow muffler we all know so well?

I'm a regular lurker and had to post.
I have an 82 LG4 and I have that same elusive double muffler exhaust. Both the 82 LG4 and LU5 had that same exhaust.
I'm so glad I came across this post! It answered my question about using a different setup too. Thanks all!

That guy big al was talkin about it me... It spits from one pipe to two small pipes running right next to each other right before the rear.It runs over the rear at an an angle so on the back side it is almost exactly in the center, From there, it T's off and two small mufflers, One going in each direction, Then the 90 degrees and out the back. I just replaced my small mufflers with Dynomax Bullets, Sounds nice

Oh yea, i forgot about those two little pipes that come of the exhaust pipe and go over the axle. I took mine off about 5 years ago.
