My Dual Exhaust idea... what you think???

Guys here it is:
'91 GTA w/ L98/5-spd. ZZ4 cam and edelbrock headers/y-pipe + other mods. I thought about taking my cat off, then where the ypipe is still 2 pipes(right before the cat) cut it off and have someone run duals to the back and over the axle. Then I was thinking about running some 1 or 2 chamber 2.5" Flows under each back ground effect. Understand what I mean. I've seen it done on a 3rd gen drag car and I think it would maybe work? Any thoughts? The mufflers would be right at the back of the car... any problems with this. They would be sitting perpendicular to the axle. I think you could turn the mufflers at like a 45 degree angle like they do on 4x4's(still perpendicular to axle though). By perpendicular I mean that the flow(entrance/exit) pipes would be perpendicular to the axle. Know what I mean? Or just confusing? In other words, they'd be sitting just the opposite of a crossflow, but at the two corners back there and turned about 45 degrees from horizontal, wedged in there(not too close though)It looks like there is sufficient room. Let me know what you all think. THANKS!

where were you planning on running the pipe and what diameter. ive seen the newer caddys and there mufflers are similar to what is described. at 45* angles to bumper and rear axle. then a short bend straitens out the tail pipes. it could work depending on how big the mufflers are...i dont have a 40 series lyin around LOL....but it would require a pro. for a good exhuast you always want mandrel bent tubes not the ones with folds on the inside of the bend. this would be a custom job as noone makes this premade....so if you have the money try it out. good luck. rIck

There is only 7 to 8 inches of space between the trunk well & the spare tire well and not alot better on the other side, 32" from the panhard brace to the lip of the bumper, and 2" of depth from the lip of the bumper to the frame & about 6" nearer the panhard brace. I was thinking of doing similar with pacesetter corvette mufflers until I called for dimentions and found out basically,, no way will they fit and look right. The only mufflers (if you want to call them that) are the dynomax bullet(round) mufflers,, and I still don't think that would look right. also I'm not to sure how well 2- 2½" pipes will squeeze thru where the factory pipe runs,, but there isn't alot of room. Maybe at the point there you could 'Y' the exhaust into a single short 3½" straight piece to fit thru and then 'Y' it back into duals. I still think the muffler fit would be iffy though.

I still don't think you understand what I mean. I want to run the mufflers parallel w/ the frame or perpendicular to the axle. In other words... turn the crossflow 90 degrees. Then when they are sitting in this position turn them 45 degrees from horizontal. I think there would be enough room, and I know I've seen it done on a drag 3rd gen for the track. It was streetable though... NOT TUBBED. WEll, I'm open to more comments if ya got 'em. Thanks

I guess I'm the 5th person in my sig but,, you wanting it to look like vette exhaust only the mufflers are twisted at 45° (as if laying on the ground looking str8 at them) or at a 45° angle in relation to the rear end itself (not parallel like a cross flow and not 90'd like a vette)? I'm guessing you mean the 1st but,, either way,, the trunk well takes up any room you have under there. maybe the drag ar you saw had the lower half of the cut off so they could fit exhaust ? (I'm trying lol )

Do you plan to run an H pipe? Be forwarned that true duals with no H or X pipe between the two pipes doesn't sound too great.

I have a true dual setup with no h-pipe. it sounds pretty darn good. it depends on your test. i like the exhaust choppy. i might get an h-pipe to see if there's a performance difference but i like the sound with no h-pipe.

I guess you'd say it would be like a Vette's system except that the mufflers would be turned at a 45 degree angle when looking form straight behind. Instead of sitting flat like normal, they'd be sitting ****eyed from horizontal. This means they would be kind of wedged in there. When you look at the horizon (like the sun setting over the water) take the water level and turn it 45 degrees. This would also be like looking at the car from behind and turning your head at a 45 to the side from straight up. Actually looking from straight behind at the bumper it would look like this: / instead of a normal muffler looking like this: - on the vettes. You know what I mean now? Later, hope this helps.
BTW- I'd plan on using a H or X pipe too!

I was having the same idea of putting a vette system on mine, even if it wasn't true dual but just to have the 2 mufflers at the back the way a vette does, the problem I found is that there just isn't alot of room at the back bumper (measurements in my 1st post). If there were a muffler that was no wider than 7" and 4" in height, this would work because the space where they would have to go is only 8" wide.(between the deep recess of the trunk where everyone like to put sub-boxes)& the spare tire well) If you are looking at the back bumper, from the bottom lip of the bumper to the frame rail on the underside, the depth to tuck a muffler up there is only 2" deep. That's why I was saying something like the dynomax round muffler would be more suited to this application, but I don't think they would be quiet enough (unless you want loud).
I made a temp. straight thru muffler packed with fiberglass for my bird (until I can decide on exhaust and get motor working right) welded up where my cat was and about 1.5' of 3" pipe off of it and I can say it is very deep & quiet idling,,, but loud on the gas. Dynomax claims for 'high horse street...' so I don't know if they would be quiet or not. if it's like what I made,, I do like the very deep tone,, but the rest is too much,, of course I am sitting on top of the outlet basically. Hopefully the first half of this makes some sense. I guess to sum it,, it would be a h-ll of a trick to get something like flowmasters back there w/o some modifying the surrounding metal(of the trunk) or going the route of round mufflers.

I've seen it done th exact way you are saying, w/ the dynomax bullets. It looks andsounds great. There is plenty of room and it is easy to do. I'm notso sure how well the pipes clear the where the intermediate pipe was, but I'm pretty sure you could make it fit. I'm considering doing it soon also

I think JEGs and Summit both carry them in 4,5, & 6" round cases ranging from $35-$70 a pop (depending on size).

I used to have a pretty unique dual setup on my 82 Z, it consisted of Hedman shortys, and 2.5" pipe using 2.5"ID X 36" long Dynomax Turbo Tubes. The exhaust ran down from the headers, and turned out about 8" the turned back vertically. I had the Turbo Tubes mounted in the "trough" between the floorpan and where the rocker panels are pinch welded. They are have a 3"OD and fit perfectly into the "trough". After the muffler, they ran about another foot then turned down slightly. The car was pretty mellow in idling/normal driving situations, but they really howled under accelleration. Before I ever heard this set-up, i was afraid it would have the ragged, 70's Ford truck, poppy "cherry bomb" glasspack sound, but it was not at all poppy and it sounded wicked!
I painted the whole exhaust system w/ VHT flat black header paint. It had better ground clearance that the factory exhaust due to them being tucked under the car in the "troughs". If you have a car w/ ground FX, e.g. Z28,IROC, RS, the exhaust isn't even visible, but when I painted my car, I took off the ground FX, and you could see the exhaust. It was a pretty clean set-up, but now I have upgraded to 3" all the way back to one-chamber Flowmasters, since the car only sees limited street use. I am planning this setup my 89 RS. Just another suggestion.
