THAT F*CKING CACKLE/POPPING NOISE

Anybody else have this problem? I have a glasspack welded in place of the cat, and it rattles like a SOB, so I'm replacing it anyway, I was thinking of replacing it with a chambered exhaust piece.

Basically, I have stock manifolds, that stupid glasspack in place of the cat (no, I didn't put it there), then 3" pipe all the way to the back where it Y's off into a dual-look with dual monza tips on each side (looks good), there is no muffler (other than the aforementioned glasscrap...er..pack). Will putting the chambered exhaust piece in place of the glasspack help the cackling from my exhaust any? I love the tone I have, but it sucks to put on a show that spectacular, only to decellerate and end it with -cackle-cackle-POP-pop-pop-pop-.

Any suggestions?

KElly

Yeap, I had two glasspacks there and one broke inside then the other, I think it was because of the heat. Try replacing it with a cat then put a small round muffler, found in Jegs, on each side where the exhaust comes out at the end of the car. This will be on each side of the gas tank. This is basically what I have and the sound is just great.

Hope it helps!

hmmmmmm...sounds like an idea. Your car doesn't pop or cackle when you decellerate?

I wish I had some idea of what your car sounded like. I love my tone (other than the rattle of the broken glasspack and the popping and cackling). I swear I can wake the dead, but it's not that annoying open exhaust sound. Dunno.

its cuz you have no cat....put a hi flow cat in....and 40 series muffler in the back. if the pipes are 3 inches then just get the muffler...if not....then i would suggest a cat back system...replacing all the pipage from the cat back.

It is not because he has no cat, it is because there is not enough back pressure to keep it from doing that. It is true that alot of cars do that when they remove the cat but not all do. We have the Headman shorty headers 2.5" pipe of of the headers into a 3.5" Ypipe into a 3" M.A.C. offroad pipe and 3" M.A.C. cat back system with 2.5 dule outlet pipes and 3" tips with resinators in them and this car does not breath back when she decelerates. To cure your problem you will need to put some sort of muffler on it at the very least. I think the exhaust with the round mufflers just before the tips would sound like an old dule exhaust car (or just about any older truck) with glass pacs, which is not a pleasant sound at all. In my opinion anything with glass pacs (that the owner put on intentionaly thinking they are a good thing) just screems HOOPTY!!!!! You might want to just get a good cat back system. This would solve your problem and depending on the system would still sound real good.

Man, what is wrong with you? That "f*cking" noise is the sound of a high-performance engine...EVERY car that hasn't been restricted to death to satisfy enviro-***** does that on deceleration. If it annoys you, bump the shifter into neutral. Sheesh.

yeah...all cars will do that. i've seen it on a million cars.

i guess from what i have learned, is is from a lack of back pressure...but who cares? a lack of back pressure is usually a good thing, and a lot of people like teh sound.

i woudl ditch the glasspack idea, get some pipe and replace the cat with that. then get a 40 series flowmaster. they will give you a MEAN sound that is probly a little cleaner than the one you get with your current setup.

M.A.C. sells an "off road" pipe that replaces the cat. It is a 3" pipe that just bolts in to where the cat is now. If you get that and a good 3" cat back system you should have no problems.

82 Z28 with 350.motor has .030 forged flat top pistions other wise stock bottom end, Summit 214/224 cam with 1.6 Harland Sharp roller rockers, stock 882 heads for now (will be getting a set of the 23 degree Trick Flows this summer), Performer RPM intake, Holley 750 Vacuum secondary, Th350 with 2200 converter, stock 3.23 geared rearend for now (getting 9" later on), Headman shorty headers, custom 2.5" into 3.5" Y pipe into M.A.C. offroad pipe and M.A.C. cat back system. So far car has only been to the track twice and is having sever traction problems but is running 60'-2.34 1/8 mile-9.2 @ 79 MPH.
