I finnaly got around to working on my camaro and i found out that i could take out my catalytic converter and replace it with just a plain pipe. i also was told doing that was illegal. so i was wondering if it is illegal to purchase the product or illegal to have a mechanic install it. just wonderin

 

I isn't illegal to buy it but it is illegal to take off your emmisions legal stuff and replace it with non emmisions stuff. Most mechanics won't do it for you. Unless it is welded on, getting off the cat is a snap. You may think about hollowing out yours and putting it back on. That way it looks legal.

Removing the cat only nets you HP in the single digits, assuming your engine is not heavily moded.383 or such.As far as weather it's legal,if your state requires emission testing, than leave it on.
