It is just the metal expanding and contracting due to the sudden change in temp.

It's actually the catalytic converter cooling down. The converter has to be very hot during operation to work properly; so it actually ends up being hotter than the rest of the system and as mentioned above, the metal is contracting as it's cooling down. The only way to get rid of it is to remove your catalytic converter.

now i know to always keep your sleeves rolled DOWN when going near the exaust of any car thats been on te road for a while, and to refer to the topic, yeah every car, new, or old will make that noise depending on if its humid, cold, and whatnot...just dont touch it like i did accidentaly :lala:

You're right - its not the converter. It's the flanges and flange bolts on the exhaust. And ALL cars do it BTW - some more than others.

Funny - Since I've never heard a cat-less car make the same pinging sounds as the ones with them. Honestly. And trust me, I've been exposed to many muscle cars and street rods that do not have catalytic converters. I'd have to hear it to believe it.....

I've never listened to any other cat-less cars cool down before - at least not to listen for any noise. But my car currently has just a straight pipe, and it still does it. It depends on how hot the exhaust piping gets - and a cat really boosts the temps

The cat helps things along with the added heat. Also, running header wrap can add some exhaust heat to the pipes. If you run a fully welded system, you probably won't have much if any noise at all.
