you cannot buy a flame thrower kit from what i know. but all you need is a spark plug or two, depending on how many tailpipes (one for each pipe) drill a whole 3 or 4 inches from the end of the tailpipe on the bottom of it, then spot weld the plug in the tailpipe, hook it up to a ignition coil (seperate from what you use to run you car) and activate the coil with a switch from in the car

use a momentary button though, not a switch, your coil will burn up if you just leave it on..

dont forget u gota run rich, or else there will be no gas to ignite. I've seen it done before but i refuse to put holes in my new catback. from what ive seen, having a catylitic converter makes it almost impossible. it needs to go or get hollowed out. secondly you should try to make ure car run a little richer, depending on its intake and what you have (carb, injection ect...)

I love this question!
I hooked up a flame thrower in my buddys 72 nova in the school parking lot.
you do need to put a spark plug into ex pipe
a 2 doller oxegen sensor fitting will do the trick weld it on drill a hole and plug the baddest spark plug you can find in there.or in case of the nova just find a hole made by rust
now the ignitor button. sound familair the one an a gas bbq doh! a one wire button that can be placed almost any where in a car. just make sure to put it in medal so its grounded.
run a wire back to the plug and wrap it on the tip. check to make sure its arching by pressing having someone press the button while you hold the plug tip buzz. "car not running of course" if it buzz's you then your gtg. i dont know for sure about the cat affecting the flame but you do need to run a little richer and you can only pop it about every 2 min or so but its a great light show if you dont burn up your car
you might try the extra coil idea it sounds like a healthy dose of current! would really scare the crap out if a tailgater

There are two manufacturers of exhaust flame thrower kits on the market. I tried to access the site that I had booked marked on this information, but my computer could not find the URL address.
Flame thorwer exhaust kits cost about $90 and do not include the mentioned spark plugs, 2 coils and plug wires required to hook up the kit.
If you write the editor of Kar Kulture Deluxe magazine where to purchase a flame thrower kit, he will probably be able to help point you in the right direction. Aaron is the former editor of the defunk Hot Rod Delux magazine that ran a great article on the installation of a flame throwing kit on a 53 Chevy.
His address is http://www.hrdeluxe.com/home.html
Use internet search words such as: flamethrowerexhaust to perform your own searches The street rod and custom guys are the ticket to the info you are seeking.
The exhaust manufacturers recommend that the kit be installed in a place that is dry and has good ventilation. Also that you use straight through mufflers, like glass packs or chambered exhaust mufflers.
Another point to consider is that your have a flexible enduro bumper on your F-body, and you want to make sure you keep the heat away from it to avoid warping it.
I lucked out and bought a new flame throwing box/kit at a swap meet from a kid who didn't know what it was. I took a chance that I did, and that I could get the directions needed to hook it up. I offered him $10, and the deal was done.
If you email me directly requesting further info I have at home, I will dig it out and get back to you with what I have.
Sorry my reply is vague, but if you follow up on the Kar Kulture Deluxe lead I mentioned, I think Aaron, the editor will hook you up with the info you need.

I go to some car shows where the guys do it on their old rods all the time, in order to get enough richness I think you need a manual choke, I'm not sure on that one, and I know all of the cars I've seen it done with, none have cats on em, Im sure the cats will stop you from getting enough ignitable exhaust through them, my guess is that cats would definitely stop it from happening.
From what I have read about the new flame thrower boxes, they cut out the spark from the ignition, preventing the fuel air mixture from being burned in the combustion chamber. The unburnt fuel mixture is pushed out the exhaust system and burned by the diverted spark by the spark plug in the tail pipe. This system does not require a choke or extra rich mixture to shoot flames.
The system does require a free flowing through system, or else the chambered mufflers or catalytic converter would trap the unburnt air fuel mixture in it and risk blowing up when the spark burns the mixture at the back of the exhaust. The flame, I guess, travels back through the pipe exploding in the muffler. I read a couple of instances where this has happened to other guys.
Remember, if your gonna play with fire, you might get burned.
It's for this very reason, that I wanted to get a kit from a professional and do as much homework on the topic before I hook one up to my car. That and the fact that my 55 Cjhevy is torn apart rightnow, and will only get my attention after the T/A is 100% finished and my 73 Vette is back up and running and painted too.
Too many project and too little time or too little money, the story of my life!
