purple hornies, will they fit?

i dont really like my tes' all that much and i need a new y-pipe still to replace the dinky 2.25" one i have and with all this LT talk and all, well... I was thinking of the hedman LT's and i was wondering wether or not a set of purple hornies with integral turn downs would fit under the car. Ive seen things like "should fit without much trouble" but this means nothing when i go to bolt them up and the SF rails or something is in the way. Anyone have any direct experience with these (or similar header mufflers) on 3rd gens?

You may be in that "try it and tell us how it goes" zone. I don't recall hearing anyone on this forum saying they've tried it.

Personally, I wouldn't like having the exhaust being dumped directly under the passenger compartment, especially for a daily driver. The noise would get old quickly. Most states have laws requiring the exhaust to be routed beyond the passenger compartment, so even if they fit, you'd be subject to tickets.

I think five7kid is right, you'd be in the "try and tell" zone. I'm going try the new Headman JR longtubes, and hook up to a Headman universal x-pipe. Tie that to two Hooker Aerochambers and dumps. I think I'm also "try and tell".

later, justin...

ive had a very loud exuast that dumps out behund the pass. seat for a while now and i never seem to get tired of it. Guess i need to have my head examined (and my hearing, too). Im not "50 state legal"now so doing this wont really affect my current situation. oh well, guess im one of the only crazies around here who would even consider this for a daily driver. I guess ill jsut buy the headers first and see how the clearences are and ill take it from there.

I've already tried it with Hooker Long Tubes. Not even close. It didn't work. The frame rails are WAY in the way.

A wee bit over 25 years ago I had header glass packs that dumped in front of the rear wheels on the '57. After a couple of years of that (daily driver, 8-hour trips home, courtin', etc.), I put some "turbo mufflers" on it with the same dumps. It was much quieter, and ran better, too (glass packs are well known for being restrictive, including the original "Purple Hornies").

There are better choices. Long tubes require compromises on a daily driver 3rd gen. Dumping exhaust anywhere but outside of the passenger compartment (with the possible exception of track use) borders on dangerous, and is bound to be annoying to someone at some time.
