More Slp Header problems- Y pipe not fitting

Along with the long list of problems I have been having with my slp headers Like warped flanges that I had to have belt sanded, I am trying to put the crossover and y pipe on my single cat '87 Iroc. I slippped the crossover pipe into the y pipe and tryed to put it up to the headers only to find that it is too wide. By that i mean the distance between the two flanges on the y pipe/crossover pipe is about 1 1/2" to 2" wider than where the header flanges are. Any one else experience this? What did you do? Even if it were to fit, the crossover pipe doesnt really mate up with the header and is a little uneven, looking like it might leak. I CANT move the crossover pipe any more because the oil pan is in the way. Anyone have this problem??????

I had the exact same problem with the y-pipe but your not going to like how I fixed it! I CUT 1 to 1 1/2 inches out of the y-pipe below the oil pan and re-welded it back together to the correct size.
I don't know what there problem was or is but they need to fix it! Christ, the smallblock hasn't changed size in 30 years!I still like the headers though, I get alot of complements and they sound great too. No leaks.

...mine bolted right up to to the header flanges, but my headers are 1 5/8"...

...that may be the difference...

I paid to have mine installed and the mechanic that did it had no problems. My suggestion is to put all of the bolts on loosely first, then once you make sure that you have no connection or clearance problems then tighten everything down. Hope this helps

You don't understand Pukka, You cannot get the bolts started loosely when it is off by almost 2 inches!

I have had all the same problems as you've all had. For the Y-pipe we cut and welded to fix that, for the warped flanges it was only on the passenger side, I bolted them to a bare head and heated up the primaries hoping that they would relieve the stress and straighten out. It worked to an extent but I still had to double up the gaskets. Where the Y-pipe mates with the passenger header is off and I have a leak there that I'm hoping to heat and bend to solve that leak tommorrow. I do like the headers and the sound, but for the price and the "suggestions" I received from SLP when all these problems surfaced, all I have to say is they were ****-Poor as far as professinalism was concerned. In other words, I was not impressed.

I finally got them done today. I brought the car to an exhaust shop and had them cut the crossover pipe and fix the length. It turned out fine so far. the car sounds alot better especially with my wide open Borla system.
I just wish I didnt have to go through all these problems though. Thanks

Another satisfied SLP customer! Not.
If the SLPs cost $200 shipped, I would propably buy them. But than again, I might settle for a cheaper and more user friendly set. SLP-DON'T BELEIVE THE HYPE!!!

I have the SLP headers and catback and I can tell you that the install of both was simple and everything fit fine. The onl problem I had was the catco cat doesn't have a good slip fit over the slp pipe. It leaked untill I bought a band clamp.
