Stupid catback question

OK, this might sound stupid, but isn't a catback system just a muffler, some tailpipes, and a mandrel bent intermediate? If so, then what's the big deal?

Is it for a larger diameter intermediate? Maybe our stock intermediate isn't mandrel bent?

Remember there are no stupid people, only people who respond to stupid questions

I've always thought of a catback system being just that,......all the components needed for your exhaust from the converter back. I'm assuming that the reason for an aftermarket catback system would be for the larger pipes that are with the system, and the type muffler that comes with it. I'm not sure about different bends of the pipes though. They would have to be similar to stock though, I would think.

The typical aftermarket cat-back system has 3" I-pipe with mandrel bends. The factory uses 2-3/4" max, and the bends are standard necked-down production.

There is restriction to be lost with an aftermarket performance cat-back.

So if you already have a muffler, then it's just the better intermediate pipe.

Don't get me wrong, that better pipe makes a difference I'm sure.....especially with headers etc...

I'm pretty sure you have to get a new muffler, since you'll need one with a 3'' inlet.
