Gutting Cat?

This may be a stupid question but how do you gut your cat and what are the advantages and disadvantages?

take it off, get a rod and screw driver, go to town on it. Just ram it all out. It will be louder and better flowing.

There are a dew disadvantages though. I recently did the method above and wow. I had an already loud exhaust, but now this thing was just deafening, even in the car. You will have a small low end power loss with taking off the cat and gain a few hp on the high end. This contrary to how it may sound is usually a good combo on these cars since the low end torque usually overwhelms the tires too much and there is not enough high end. What you really need to do is put some sort of pipe through the cat after you gut it. I assume you are leaving it on the car for visual inspection. Getting a pipe through can be quite difficult believe it or not. I had a high flow 3 inch that I gutted and could not get a 3 inch pipe through. A 2 3/4 might work, I had a piece of 3 that I took a 1/4 inch out of the middle and squeezed it through which took quite a while, you may have better luck. When I was done though, the exhaust really quieted down and seemed to just flow better overall. Good luck. On the other hand, if you're not at all worried about emissions just put a pipe in it's place. One more thing, some people have trouble with getting their exhaust hot enough to work the O2 sensor after gutting the cat, make sure it is working right afterwards. Good luck.

when i did it it was pretty hard tring to get it off the y pipe. I hooked it to a pully and to a tree and pulled really hard and hit it with a really big hammer for 15 minites and it finaly came off. is there a easyer way? I want to see how it is without my exhaust but i dont want to do the same thing i did with the cat tring to get it off the little grove that the clamp made.

So just putting holes in the cat will give better high end HP? Also Do i have a high flow cat? everything is stock.

------------------
92 Camaro 305 TBI. Everything stock so far except a shift kit.

Future mods. Spark plug wires and plugs, tint, Cutting off cat and new 3inch pipes. Maybe putting 2 glass paks for effect. any other advise on getting to 300+ HP would be appreciated. Thanks

no you do not have a high flow cat. When it is empty it flows much better. I put a slit in the inlet pipe on my cat and bent back the tabs, then the y-pipe came off easily.
