What if I just cut it off?

When I test drove my car, the muffler was severed a little more than halfway back...and it sounded pretty cool and bassy...when they fixed it turned into a really really quiet exhuast..so I'm wondering what would happen if I just cut the exhuast pipe off where it was welded back on instead of buying some expensive exhuast system (for now). What probs would I run into with this?

this happend to my TA about a year and a half ago but the muffler fell off at the point were it connects to the intermediate pipe. it also sounded cool and wanst to loud b/c of the cat. I had no problems but wanted to have teh tips out the back, just like the look. If u like it keep it until you get herassed by the cops or want to put a cat back system on it. thats my .02

I know a guy who just hacked his exhaust off right before the back axel. Sounds mean at idle and high RPMs but around town and just off idle it actually sounds kinda crappy IMO. Its pretty loud but yet ridiculous, but its EXTREMELY hollow sounding, and the cats still on there. Another guy i knew just had nothing after the cat, it actually sounded better than with the extra pipe after it. BUT the nasty sounding one was an IROC and the OK one was an RS, so the size of the pipes may have been a factor. Just my 02.

BTW mine has a huge split in the I-pipe right before the muffeler and sounds very bassy, but not real loud. Oh well, soon to be replaced with 3" flowmaster anyway.
