can i modify my muffler?

i was just wondering if there was anyway you could modify your muffler to make a different sound? like gut it? or put turn downs on the muffler? right now im running a stock muffler and i cant afford a cat back right now so im trying to find a free way to change the sound untill i can get a cat back

Drill some 1/4 holes in the casing. Other than that, there's not much you can do.

i wouldn't drill holes.

but by changing the tail pipe diamator, it should change the tone.

i cut some notches in the pipe before it enters the muffler. it's definitely louder and deeper, but it doesn't sound anything like a good aftermarket exhaust setup. i like it, and it'll do till i can afford a new exhaust system too.

i just took a grinder and cut (2) 1-2 inch notches in the pipe right before it entered the muffler (but i didn't cut it completely off). that way, some of it goes thru the muffler and some of it doesn't.

it sounds kind of "dirty" loud, but in all honesty i like it. and if i ever decide i'm tired of it, i can just spot weld the notches closed.

the only bad thing is that sometimes i get a wicked whiff of exhaust fumes that almost knocks you out (good thing i love the smell of exhaust though).

exhaust fumes they not do no damage to my brane at all yet.

but here's a question: if i someday run straight pipes off the headers without a cat or muffler, will the fumes be that much worse? a friend of mine had a camaro without a muffler and cat and i don't remember the fumes being as strong as they are on my car.

If it's running real efficient, the exhaust fumes won't be that bad, regardless of the cat. CO (carbon monoxide) has no smell though

My friend bought a 92 B4C that sounded REALLY REALLY good. Its sounded mean, very loud, and very throaty. But the guy only said "It has a flowmaster muffler". Im like why is his 80 series muffler a little louder and so much different sounding then my 80 series with a catback.

Well it turns out the muffler had a hole in it. He got it patched and it sounded way quieter, esp because he only has a muffler and no cat back. So we are all telling him to put another hole in it

change the tips.. cut off the stockers were the come off the muffler and put on something bent a little different (you'll have to experiment here) and some nice big tips. That usually makes it a little louder and ALOT throatier.

if i weld my new muffler to the i pipe coming from the cat will it pass PA inspections?

and also i bought my flowmsater off of ebay and the guy that cut it off bent the i pipe inlet so that is was more oval than circular

is there something that i can do to get the inlet back to original condition?

You can use a pipe expander to bring it back to it's original shape.

Most big auto parts stores should have them. I would reccomend getting a higher quality one since the lower quality ones have a tendency of breaking. The tools aren't cheap especially for a good one, so unless you plan on using a few times, I'd just take it to a muffler shop and they'll be able to do it for next to nothing.
