Hooker SC LT Headers - Starter Clearance
Hooker SC LT Headers - Starter Clearance
With the engine (383) still on the stand and starter bolted up, I just bolted the headers on temporarily just to check the fit.
#4 pipe just barely interferes with the nipple on the end of the starter.
I'm sure just a very small dimple would provide clearance but what about starter longevity, especially going through cam break-in.
This is the standard GM starter that measures about 8.75 to 9.00" (bolt holes to nipple).
If that starter isn't going to live I would rather change to a mini-starter while it's still on the stand. I don't really want to change as money is becoming a factor and I'm only running 10:1 compression which shouldn't require some fancy hi-torquer at a $150 plus.
What do you guy's think? Is there a rule-of-thumb on air space or header clearance? and do you have any suggestions on any low cost Mini's?
Thanks for sharing your experience.

I bought a CVR mini starter from Jegs. It clears if you adjust the base correctly. never had a problem.

they sell a starter heat blanket for L98 corvettes that will work perfectly. look around on www.ecklers.com or www.madvet.com for it.
