Header installation
Header installation
I just wanted to know how difficult it is to install headers? I am good at working on cars and I think I can do just about anything....If you got yours installed at a shop, I'd like to know how much you paied. Thanks for your time.

I put headers on my 92' camaro about 5 years ago. And i had the help of a mechanic. Though he and i had never done this before it was a major pain in the @$$. It took us like 8 to 9 hours to install them. In fact after that he turns away people who ask him to put them on....Good luck with that one.

I'd say in most cases, header installs aren't for the novice. I've had 4 different sets on my car alone, (experimenting w/ the different brands). Putting the cat. back onto the new Y-pipe is a total PITA, but it is possible. Also, 87'- down V - belt cars require some fabricating to get some of the brackets to work. Removal of the ols stuff is about the worst part. These cars are over 10 yrs old, and getting some of the bolts free is a test of your patience at times. But, good luck..... headers are worth the effort IMHO.

I paid $200 for the labor. I supplied the parts. The shop I went is very experienced at doing this and had it done in about 4 hours.

Headers were the first mod I did on my car, and it was the first time I ever did major work on a car (other than oil changes and what not). Its really not too bad as long as you have some patience. It took me and a friend the better part of a long weekend to get it done.

My Hedman headers were @$$holes to get in. I had to jack up the engine, first off...then the bastard y-pipe wouldn't clear the oil pan. So my father and I got this idea to smack the pan with a hammer to get a LITTLE clearance (just what we needed)...we weren't gentle enough and cracked the pan. That's not that big a problem..it was OUR gamble, but the friggin' y-pipe MADE for my car didn't fit the right way. Ugh.

I was quoted 250$ from a reputable shop in my town. That is for the install only, Ive still gotta get the Heddmans. But for the 15-20 (at least thats what Ive heard) horsey gain,,,I'm willing to pay.
