80 or 40 series flowmaster muffler?

i want to change the sound of my car and i love the sound of flowmasters. im on an extreemly tight budget so i cant afford a full cat-back yet so im going to jsut get a muffler. i searched the boards and iv heard that the 80 series isnt loud at the begining but it gets louder? and i went to flowmaster and listend to both sound clips and i liek to tone of both so i just want the loudest one. on their site it said the 80 was louder inside and out but on here alot of people said the 40 series sounded 3times louder than an 80. also if i put those big chrome tips on the end does that make it louder? im confused and i dont know what to do. if anybody has a good sound clip of a 40 or an 80 that would be great, but how much different will it sound if it doesnt have a 3" i pipe and 3" tailpipes? i still have the stock 21/2 in and out but i have headers and a strait pipe through my cat.

Putting bigger tips definitely helps. I just installed a set of 3.5" chromes on my 2.5" tailpipes and the sound improved. I also have a flowmaster 80 and headers. I like the sound so much I find myself driving with the radio off a lot now.

Flowmaster are the tpye of mufflers IMO that get louder as they break in. When I first got the Flowmaster on the Trans Am was noticably louder but wasn't as loud as I expected. But now that's its been on a year I have to say the car is much louder and raspy sounding. To further the loud level I just went ahead and put a cut-out on

bad_ta_05,
Also the angle and length of the tips will affect the sound inside the car. This will determine how loud you hear the exhaust from the inside while driving. The point is, the more of an angle pointing from the muffler to the ground, this way the exhaust will deflect and bounce between the bottom of the car and the ground. Believe me I "lost" quite a bit of sound after welding on the new 3inch tips, which are way too far out.
And yes I do feel the flowmaster's get louder with age, as mine now sound louder than when I put them on just under 1 yr ago.
Last thing is that I have read other people on here say that the 40 series is the same as the 80... only the 80's are used for the single inlet while the 40's are for more dual exhaust type setup's. If you dont have dual exhaust, it's probably better to go with the 80's so you get 2 outlets... 2 tailpipes, IMO.

Hope that helps a bit...

Let us know which one you get and how they sound...

One of my friends has a 92 Z28..had an 80 series...had it cut off...then had a 40 series installed. The 40 series was seriously like 3 times louder.....the 80 series has single in....dual out..the 40 has single in..single out....that's the bad thing...I would LOVE to have a 40 series installed....I gotta have dual outlets out the back....

I run a 30 series on my car. It isn't the loudest at Idle but when you hit the gas... look out!

It is getting there. I was only able to get about 1400 miles on the car last year but plan to get a ton more this year.
