Headers on 350 w/A.I.R system?
Headers on 350 w/A.I.R system?
I have an 88 trans am with 350 tpi in it. i was considering headers on it but the engine has an A.I.R system which includes 4 small tubes being routed into each exhaust manifold. i dont want special headers that work with the AIR system but instead I was wondering if I could get rid of the whole AIR sytem or at least pinch the tubes shut so I can put normal headers on the engine. any info would help.thanks

Yes you can, just get header without AIR hookups and remove your AIR tubes and smog pump.
You sure can remove those AIR tubes. I wouldnt recommend it though if you have emissions in your state. A lot of guys (inlcuding myself) have removed or are going to remove the AIR system (which includes the smog pump, AIR tubes, and the plastic box (beside the heater control valve) with a couple hoses going into it).
It sure does de-clutter then engine bay when you remove the emissions system, and it makes your headers actually look like headers...plus you loose a little weight.
For your sake, keep the AIR system...don't destrot it by pinching the tubes, you may need the system in the future, or you could sell it...

can the state tell if you have no air system if there is no visual under the hood inspection? can they tell if the smog pump is gone with the emission tester alone?

after i finish removing a/c, smog is next hopefully.. removing pump / other stuff, and then straight piping the cats and removing air tubes.
i think i can still pass w/o having the air stuff, unless of coarse its a visual inspection which i dont think it is..

IMO, emissions will be implemented nationwide at some time or other so why not keep it unless you're really hardcore about racing or need the room. I'll keep mine.
