Ok, IROCZTWENTYGR8 and I are having a little disagreement.

All In fun though

Lets say you have two cars, EXACTLY THE SAME and you put a nice loud exhaust on both of them. Lets say you decide to cut the exhaust short of the rear and put turn downs on it, on one of the cars.

On the other car you put the same exhaust, but your run the exhaust all the way to the end of the bumper with 3" tips.

I'm saying the car with the turn downs will be louder inside the car.

He says the car with the exhaust all the way out the bumper will be louder inside...

The one with the turndowns will be louder inside due to the exhaust exiting right under your seat.

Thats not what he means. He means like stock Third Gen turndowns.

LOL IROCThe5.7L

Here's MO. To me if you have tips that are straight out and not long, maybe about the same length as the turn downs, NOT past the bumper like Flowmasters because I know they will be lower inside, it should be the same or louder in the int. (Of course pipes/tips closer to the engine will be louder than a longer pipe that isn't) Straight out tips will be louder outside then turndowns obviously since they are facing out. Example. I had turndowns on my car and I cut them off. (had to, or I wouldn't have) Now the pipes are concealed behind the bumper and not angle cut, just the regular pipes facing out, with about only 4" taken off where the turndown part was. It made the exhaust noticably louder exterior and interior. And, I wasn't the only person that noticed. So it still resonates off of the body, but now is even louder because of the way it is facing out and not "muffled" towards the street instead. I also met a dude that had an Edelbrock exhaust on his 305 RS. He put 3" chrome tips that did not come past the bumper on and said that the car sounded better exterior and interior than the turndowns he had on before them.

I meant turn downs that end before the bumper......

All im trying to say is turndowns are going to have a higher interior residence. And having tips going straight out the back of the car is not going to make it louder then turndowns inside.

Like I said all in good fun, just wanted to hear others opinions. :lala:

the turndowns will be louder because it will echo off the ground

in general, i'd agree with that. but you can make stock-style turndowns that are quieter, if the flow leaves the car at an angle where the reflections don't really come back toward the car as much.

however, acoustics is a little more complicated, and also has to do with the diameters and lengths of the pipes, since that has a lot to do with the resonance frequencies created.

when i get some time and extra money, i may really go through some of the work to come up with a better exhaust system for my convertible. i have the 5.0 TPI, so it's very restrictive, and i'd like something with a little better flow, but i don't want something extremely loud, and in fact i wouldn't mind it being a little quieter than the stock exhaust, which is way too loud at idle...

I'm gonna play Devil's advocate and say that both setups will be equally loud or that the difference between the two setups will be undetectable to you.

I just had 4 inch jobs done earlier today. From what I have noticed, the three inch will sound louder. They will make for better sound as well. Turn downs suck, and in their stock location, they are too far from the ground to make any difference in the noise level. Now don't get me wrong, there isn't a measureable jump in noise, but it just seems to me that the lower, mellower tone from the 3 inch resonates more.
For the record, I'm running flowmaster with no cat, and IMHO, the tips make the muffler sound much much better.

One final note, If the car has a stock factory muffler, I don't really think you'd be able to tell a difference.

I've had both with the same exhaust.

I bought my Dynomax kit that comes with 30* turn downs like the stock tailpipes. It sounded pretty good, and was much more noticable than stock.

Later I added the tips I have now. 3 1/2" SS, angle cut, rolled tips. They're much louder than the turndowns were at 62-65 MPH. Everywhere else in the RPM range they're quiter inside the car.

With my t-tops off, the tips I have now are louder, only because I hear them outside the car.

So in my experience, the turndowns were louder while I was inside the car.

Residence? What?

I think the straight pipes would be louder, just because the air has less of an obstacle before it exits. I've got no evidence but it just makes sense to me. Seems like those **** rockets get a lot louder with just a little tip. As far as the sound echoing off of the ground.. echos don't make a sound louder

if we are talking about turndows that are under the back seats then i say the turn down setup will be louder inside the car. if we are talkign about stock turn down style tailpipes - i dont think it matters
