Loud exhaust

Ok, this isn't third gen related, but we have a 1974 Corvette. The exhaust is a little loud on it. The mufflers are new, but the pipes running to them off the manifolds have a few little holes in them. How much of a difference do these maake? the largest hole is maybe the size of a pencil. I know when it is a huge hole, it is loud, but it just doesn't seem like it would be that loud. is it that, or the mufflers? There is not much puttering noise that can usualy be exhaust leaking.
Thanks
