Do I really need A.I.R?

I'm looking at headers and it seems that I can get headers for less if it doesn't have A.I.R..what exactly does A.I.R do?

Its an emissions requirement. The AIR diverter pumps air directly in the exhaust manifolds when the car is running in open loop. When in closed loop, the diverter valve routes air directly to the cat.

If you don't have to worry about emissions, you don't need the AIR tubes.

And the computer will never know its gone from what i've heard. I plan on putting non-air headers on this spring and ditching the cat, air pump, diverter box, and all the rest of the crap since there are never any smog checks in my part of the state.
