3" y-pipe too big?
3" y-pipe too big?
Just wondering. I had my y-pipe made up last week and it looks sweet. Haven't tested the car out yet b/c I 'm still working out all the bugs fromt the new motor. Anyway, I have a buddy who likes to spout out all kinds of statistics that he reads on the internet and he's telling me that it will eat up a noticeable bit of low end b/c the y pipe is too big. True?

It's not going to eat up that much low end power. It will be a bit lower but the high end increase is worth it.

Flowmaster Y-Collector= $25.00
4 Header Collector = $23.00
Labor and the 2 1/2" pipe $90.00
TOTAL COST= $138.00
What set of headers are they made to fit? Those are Hooker Competition headers part # 2460-1 Ceramic Coated (jet-hot)
Single cat? You can tie a cat into it, but I dont have a cat on there right now.
I plan on sending the Y-Pipe and the cat back exhaust to Jet-Hot to have them Ceramic Coated.

Mine ran me $120. A local shop did it for me and they had a hell of a time getting it right. They said it's the last one they'll do
. Anyhoo, mine are Hooker Competition shorties too. I wouldn't run anything else. I think they're the best shorties you can put on a small block. I have the single cat setup. I was going to have them hack off the cat but it's illegal for them to do so. So I'm gonna put it on the lift at work today and replace the cat with a cutout and I need to weld in an 02 fitting. I'll get some pics as soon as I get them. TTYL.

$120 ehhh, I've been thinking about getting a y pipe made to fit my hooker cat-back, I just want to be assured it will be of good quality.
BTW- 3'' y pipe is what you want for a low-mild performance V8.

3" is big enough to flow enough air for a 350 to produce ~450HP.
That's mild to you?

This is always a debate, just remember that bigger is NOT always Better. I have seen a SBC had a 406 and went from 1 5/8 headers to 1 3/4 and lost .10 in quarter no other changes. Most people will say that a 406 need the big headers and 3" pipe but the Only True way to find out is through DYNO. Just remember every engine has too many variables to say what works for one engine will work for another. IMO: The way I build my 400 is to have mid range power in the rpm range that it will be used the most. Thats why I thought that 1 5/8" headers and 2 1/2" Pipes would benefit me in my intended rpm range.

i have a full 3" i'm trying to sell right now..........includes everything minus the headers.
what are some of you paying for these custom y pipes?
i paid 1100 including headers for my 3" setup so i was trying to get around 500 for all the piping.
