Should I mod FM 80series?

My engine is a 305TBI with stock manifolds and cat. I've got 2-1/2" pipe going to FM 80 series(2-1/2"in,dual 2-1/2"out). I like the sound at idle and at WOT(especially since I moded the stock air cleaner assembly). While cruising, the sound is a little on the soft side; that may be because I always have the windows up.

Well, I was checking out FM's website and looking at the picture of the 80 series muffler and what it looks like internally. What I don't like about it is that the exhaust comes in on one side and has to go to the other end(speaking width wise); so the exhaust doesn't flow straight out(lengthwise).

Well I was thinking about cutting a 2-1/2" hole a few inches from the driver's side exit; that way it will be a dual out on the driver's side. I would probably weld on a turndown instead of running pipe all the way back(that would look weird: two exits on the left; one on the right).

Doing this would probably increase flow and sound. The drawback is that there would be less exhaust coming out the passenger side pipe.

Headers aren't an option right now. I was thinking about adding a bullet or another performance muffler(FM40, Hooker Maxflow, etc.), but I'm a little apprehensive about the sound being too loud and getting a ticket for it. Plus there's the cost of a new muffler. The mod I'm talking about shouldn't cost too much(that way I can save up for something else). What do you think?

Man are you NutZ?

Ppl would look at your car & laugh at it. Just get a nice 1/2 decent high-flow cat & i think that should cure your problem. Remember, a motor that has mods (ie. Cam, headers ect...) will sound better through the exact same exhaust.

So basically, if you plan on doing headers, it will be even louder after getting the high-flow cat.

On a previous Camaro I put on a hi-flow cat with the same muffler(and the sound did get a bit louder), so that is an option. But I was going to wait until the stock one went bad. About the only headers I can afford right now are Summits; but with visual inspections, I need emmissions legal headers.

Open your windows. It should keep getting louder though.

ok,ok. Point taken. I kinda figured it was a little off the wall. I'll just save up for headers and hi-flow cat. The guy at an exhaust shop, I went to, said he'd fab up a dual exhaust with side exits, but I can't afford that right now. I also found out from the local authorities that side exits(in front of the rear wheels is illegal). Which I can somewhat understand because of the possibility of fumes getting into the cabin; but there's Mustang Cobras, and Vipers that come/came from the factory with side exiting exhaust.

I've seen on several car shows on tv, where dual exhausts have been done by running the pipe under the axle. Would that cause too much of a ground clearance problem on our cars?

Yeah, I checked out that page before. But, thanks again. You know I called Competition Engineering a while back about that blue Track Bar Brace and the gentleman I spoke to didn't know about the part; or that they don't make it. Maybe it was a one-off thing.

Well, I was under the car a while back taking some measurements, and to me it seems that the only thing getting in the way of running pipe over the driver's side axle is the panhard rod. There are some lines that get in the way(or that would be near the exhaust pipe). I didn't have a piece of pipe to check clearance between the floorpan and axle, etc. Oh well. Thanks again guys for your input.
