Is a cat-back better than running no muffler?

Yes, its me again. I seem to be posting a lot lately but hey, whatever. I'm learning a lot now. But anyway, my question is just what the topic states, i have no muffler and *** does it sound awesome the way its setup. BUT, would i be better off running a cat-back system as opposed to what i have now? Performance wise i'm thinking that cat back is better..but damn, i dont wanna loose that sound...THATS why i'm probably gonna email SLP about their loudmouth system and see if it can somehow fit on my car. ALL opinions and comments welcome.

With a good quality cat-back, I doubt you will lose that much performance. But yeah open headers do sound awesome.

when i was installing my exhaust i drove it with open headers, then with the cat and catback on, it does sound kool with open headers, but it still sounds kool with a good catback

I drove my 305 with open headers too, sounded really nice, but driving around the streets cops should be a main concern. In this case... go with the cat-back! It gets to be a pain having to go into neutral just to pass by a parked cop car... but if you're talking about racing at a track you can just disregard this post

When I put my flowmaster muuffler on my old firebird, in the middle of the project I had to run to the exhaust shop to get an adapter... and well with a gutted cat and no muffler it sounded SLOPPY AS H*ll

granted I also put a 350 into this car, the Borla 3" adjustable Cat Back is by far the best. and if you still want open headers....put in the biggest plate, then you have open headers on the passenger side of your car

The whole point is to get the exhaust flowing through your exhaust at 300ft/s. Higher or lower will show a performance loss, though if it's close it's negligable. Don't even think about running headers, no cat and straight 3" pipes on a 305 like you have...you'll lose power. Stick with headers, a high flow cat or no cat, and a 2.5" (or 3"..not needed, esp. on a 305) cat-back muffled exhaust.

300ft/s? I never knew there was a figure.

am I flowing to much. I have 350, jet stage II chip, T.E.S headers, high flow cat, borla 3" cat-back and next week ported/siamesed plenum, and siamese SLP runners.

You see, i really would switch to a catback, but damnit all, i've driven w/ this setup for over a year and its just so fricking loud. I love it, and i have YET to have any problems w/ cops. What catback is going to sound as close to that as possible? I'm not looking to get a borla cause those are expensive...i hear a lot about hooker...fill me in here
