Are Edelbrock TES headers 1 5/8" or what?

I cant find any place where it says the size on the websites. I assume they are 1 5/8" tubes with either 2 1/2" or 3" collectors, right? I want to go with 1 5/8" instead of 1 3/4" as my motor is not highly modifiied (yet)

I can't find it, either, and don't have a set to go measure. Everything I've heard, though, is that the current version is 1-5/8" - not sure about the collector, but probably 3" down to 2-1/2" at the y-pipe.

FWIW, Chevy High Performance mag in their "My Generation Camaro" 350 build-up dyno'd a mild 350 at 380 HP with the TES, y-pipe, and single 3" muffler (no cat), with non-CC q-jet & Performer intake. The results when they put the engine back in the car were a little more disappointing, though.

Interesting on that dyno. I wish I could get that kind of HP, maybe someday. I am going by what Lingenfelter says in his books, that 1 5/8" headers are good up to something like 400HP. Everyone seems to get 1 3/4" (at least at the gatherings in Houston) though, and Im sure they don't have 400HP. My car will beat most. Im running in the mid 13s (estimate from 1/8 mile time) now with stock manifolds. I have changed the TB for a 52mm, mildly ported SLP runners, and Accel base, and borla catback. It probably sounds stupid to have done everything else before the headers, but I got good deals on them. Still looking for a deal on the headers, guess I'll have to spring full price. I would expect to see a good improvement with that other stuff. Saw improvement in times with TB and Catback, but not runners and base. I think IM liimited at this point by the manifolds

From my own experience & what I have seen from others, the TES will hold you to low 13's - high 12's. The set I had was 1 5/8"(pn6872) purchased from Summit in 1999.

From what I've seen (Buckeyeroc and a few others) the TES seem to be good for low 12's or maybe even high 11's when his car gets tuned. Not that their good because they're not on a 400+ motor. The collectors suck and the pipes are all crimped together where they meet. SLP collectors aren't much better, the pipes aren't crimped, but the collecters still are a wimpy 2 and a half inches. Mine are coming off as soon as everything else gets tuned. Going to Hooker long tubes from a TES seems to be good for 3-4 tenths on a 400+ engine from what I've seen over the years.

I disagree. I just got a set of SLPs and the collector measures 3" at the Y-pipe exit. The Y-pipes to the collector are 2 1/4".

The "collector" is typically defined as the point where the primary tubes join together into a single tube. On a V8, that would be the 4 tubes of one side. For shorties, the y-pipe is then bolted to the collector.

The collector is typically bigger than the y-pipe on 3rd gen shorties.

To answer the original question, yes all Edelbrock TES for thirdgens are 1-5/8" primaries. They did away with the step-down style junkers about three years ago.

1 5/8 primaries down to 2.5" collectors to a 3" y pipe, simple as that, Done and Done.

Since it's a pretty flat flange there, you can get a sheet of gasket material at Auto Zone for about $6.

THIS IS VERY MISLEADING! The SLP headers basically only have a 2-1/4" collector - NOT a 3" collector. Sure, if you measure the very end of the collector you might get 3". But, that doesn't matter. If you measure the area directly inside the collector to where it necks down you will get 2.2". Ouch. I know - I had a set of SLP headers and was pissed at the collector size after measuring it.

When you mean "necking down", you mean the size of the outlet on the header where the upper flange is right? Not the Y-pipe outlet...

As seen in the first HUGE pic I posted here:
