I wasn't real impressed with the quality or fit of the SLP headers. I see they are lightly rubbing the steering shaft (in addition to the poor quality welds).
How did you shift your steering shaft over?

Any info appreciated-

see i used a piece of brass about the same size as the shaft then held it on place then my grandfather wacked it 3 times!

all i have to say is that they better add some power

it did rub before i moved the shaft and put the dent in.

now full travel of steering both ways no interference issues.. close but doesnt hit.

i moved the shaft/column from inside the car, remove knee pad, fuse panel and then three bolts on the firewall and two holding the whole column up near the top.

Looking good, the passenger side wasn't too bad to put in. They took way to long to put in though. SLP should sell parts that will fit the car without modifications.

OUCH! Oh, man - I dimpled mine by putting about four thicknesses of shop rag over the tube and tapping it. Tap it, test fit - make a mental note of where it hits, do it again. I ended up with a fairly flat dimple that didn't cut into the volume of the tube very much, and it doesn't show very bad either.
BTW, why do your flanges and the first inch or so of your primaries look blue?

no clue why, i just got them coated, so what ever happens to them happens. that the dead batteries with no flash, they are not blue...

i am so glad i am done almost should be able to test drive the car with open headers tomorrow.

the two highlights were, denting the header and denting the oil pan

i just wounder why people buy the slp headers and then have to beat them up to make them fit like in those pics. if ur spending like 600bucks on shorty headers, they should fit with no problems at all.

Wow, that looks terrible. I guess it does the job though. I would have tried changing motor mounts or something to move the engine.

I don't get it. I never had this problem. I installed my 1-3/4" SLP's about three years ago and they dropped right in. In fact, I had to remove the driver's side header last weekend to get an EGT sensor bung welded in. Again, it dropped right in. Here's a pic.

Well maybe the good people at SLP decided to change the design of them just because they felt like screwing people over. Just a thought. -89IRO

with that much clearance they look like 1 5/8 when installed.

thats a pic Justins86bird posted in another thread.

i cant even get my header out, i still need to jack the engine up to get the header to slid out, but when installed it does have clearance now, and i am glad i am done with this installed.

I don't think SLP redesigned them because I bought mine over three years ago, unless of course, you bought yours before I did. And believe me, they are 1-3/4". I've seen the 1-5/8" and there is a difference in the flange-to-tube area. The 1-5/8" headers have what appear to be another "flange" of sorts. Mine do not have this additional piece of steel. Also as a double check, I just measured the #1 tube with a micrometer. It reads 1.75 inches.

Has anyone tried MAC 3rd gen headers? I have installed two sets on 4th gen cars and they are freakin awesome, look good, good quality, excellent fit and easy install. The 3rd gens look good in the catalog, the y pipe looks hella better than SLP does. They are proud of them at 460.00 and yes they are 1 5/8

Maybe the motor mounts are shot & the motor is not positioned where it should be, or the frame is bent such that the steering shaft has been moved closer to the pass side.

That is why I don't like SLP headers. Cost to much, a lot of them don't fit properly. I will not beat on a pair of $500 headers.

Since you've already got the SLP's and you can't send them back now with the dent then just stick with them. That really blows though man, you'de expect something that expensive to fit right, but with SLP's my experience has been you do not get what you pay for.

Just a note about SLP's ever chaning quality. I don't understand why some people have problems and some don't - I wonder what is going on in the manufacturing process at SLP. Each individual set of headers is slightly different. I bought a set in 2000 with AIR tubes and at the time they looked pretty damn good, good welds, straight flanges, perfect y-pipe fit, etc. I sold those to get rid of the AIR tubes this year and got a new set. All I can say is that I have now realize what all the *itching has been about. These are an entirely different story.

My steering column hit the headers :

And a pic after I had moved the steering column over about 1/4" where it goes through the firewall. There was a bit of filing involved to open up the screw holes on the bracket but essentially it worked.

Hey you guys with SLP headers:

Besides one of the primaries rubbing the steering shaft, are any of you having problems with them rubbing, touching, or interfering with the brake lines?

I had to bend mine out of the way because they were touching, but it wasn't a big deal. Took a few minutes.

I bent the brake lines out of the way slightly and I am still thinking about wrapping them with some DEI thermal insulation where the lines are very close.

See, thats weird! I know a few guys with SLP 1 3/4's and they didn't have to move any brake lines or dimple the primaries for steering shaft clearance. Maybe you guys got a new batch that were slightly different in production?

Ever think that it's your car that's different, not the headers? Sure, the header making machines probably have certain tolerances, but your car has 1000 pieces that could move around. What is more likely?

if your motor mounts are worn then the motor will kinda sag. it pushes the headers into the steering column. just get some moroso solid motor mounts, those things are bad!

Did you even try moving the steering column and shaft over? It is just 2 bolts that hold the steering column up. The holes that are there can be elongated even if there isnt enough adjustment in the first place. I sure as heck would have tried to find a way around denting my headers.

Yes, I read that but then i read this, and wasnt sure what he was referring to here. Anyway, if he didnt I would have still elongated the steering column bolt holes instead of denting the primary. It looks like he got it almost far enough over without denting it that I bet if he would have elongated it a bit he would have been fine. So is there actually adjustment at the firewall too? I never really looked.

Is there any other complaints out there like there are about SLP headers? I agree, you spend 400+ bucks on a set of headers, you expect them to fit, I have talked to 3rd gen guys, and 4th gens and both have said the fitment of the SLP headers and y pipe leave alot to be desired. Yes I am sure there are some differences between cars, but looking at the pics there are almost 1inch worth of difference between different cars. Yeah you could put solid mounts in the car, but who in the hell in their right mind would want to do that for a street car? Yes SLP makes some neat stuff, but their 3rd gen headers leave a bit to be desired, and dont even get me started on y pipe fitment. Why doesn't SLP have better customer service and try to make their product better? Because they know there are people out there no matter what are going to buy their product and put it in, bitch about it and go on. Maybe I am wrong here, but I dont understand why SLP doesnt step up and try to help 3rd genners. There are other companies on here that reply about there product but does SLP? If they have and I haven't seen it let me be the first to apologize for my statements. Ok i'm done ranting.

some have to dent, some dont, some try new mounts and still have to dent, some try moving the column like me and still have to dent..... the list goes on of trying to get them to fit..

slp = ok in my book.

Edlebrock TES own..... a$$.
I'd still put up with the crap fitment and poor quality welds of SLP before buying TES.
I would consider putting TES's on my niece's Barbie tricycle. For about two seconds.
