If you just gut it you will be left with a "Hollow" kinda sound. It will be a little louder, But not too bad, A big problem will be, Alot of exhaust shop wont touch a vehicle with a gutted cat, Around here the best shop around wouldn't do my catback, So I went out and bought a high-flow, I am very happy, Cant wait to get al my new stuff on.

Cat gutting on a 1993 caprice with 305? Will this cause an engine code to come up? will it cause problems with the OBD II emissions garbage?

shouldn't cause any codes, and a 93 is NOT OBD II, I think the first OBD II cars were out in 95 with all of them being OBD II in 96 or 97

Personally I wouldn't gut the cat, first of all, it won't flow very well, better than an ungutted cat but not nearly as well as a pipe. Same with sound, it'll be louder but not as loud as a pipe. Thirdly you'll be killing a perfectly good cat, which could be expensive to replace if your state ever decides to do smog testing. Also if you sell your car out of state you may create some problems for the new owner. If you only have to pass a visual test you could gut your cat and shove a 3" pipe through it, making a straight pipe out of it.

if you are going to go threw all that effort just get a pipe made with a rounded flare that goes to the cat back and cut it the right lenght and take the original cat and just take off the shell by prying open the bends on the side and just weld it on the pipe and it will look just like a cat when looking under ur car.

i gutted my cat and gained 1.2 seconds in the 1/4 mile...i was told that this was a fluke and not to endorse it but i was happy with my results...and yes my exhaust got louder.......only problem is that since my engine is old and worn out....a lot more of the smoke makes its way through the exhaust than b4 i gutted it....

btw just incase u were wondering... i went from a 15.9 to a 14.7...
