more power with a muffler?

hey, i just finished my exhaust on my 92 305 tbi. i installed hedman elites with a custom 3" y pipe a high flow catco cat and a 3" I pipe. the aero chamber muffler i ordered is on back order so i had the shop stop the I pipe where the muffler would sit., so for now its just an open 3" I pipe. i took the car out last night and the power was pretty nice, im not sure if its just me, but i expected more low end torque. what i was wondering is, am i losing torque due to a not enough back pressureissue? when i put the muffler on will i see even more improvements? let me know. thanks.

No you will make less power when you put the muffler on.

you wont gain any low-end torque after you get the muffler on there. probably wont be much of a difference at all except you can hear yourself think.

surprisingly its not at all loud for no muffler. it actually sounds nice, especially when you open her.

You are basically running your car with like the cut-out open. When my car was a 305 I ran it all the time with the cut-out open. Sound wasn't that bad, in fact it was probably a little quieter than my current engine with the cut-out closed. You will make more power with the muffler off due to the less restriction in the exhaust. The cat should be creating backpressure anyway so no worries about that. The only thing I can see problems with it is if Mr. Law pulls you over for no muffler. You won't really notice that much of a difference with the muffler on other than sound level wise.

Probably just felt like that because the car was quieter. Gave the illusion the car wasn't trying. With the open exhaust it seems you are going at it because of how loud it is.

actually, the car was just as loud before hand because the I pipe was like slightly rotted through, so you heard it under the car.. anyway, thanks guys, well see what happenes with that muffler.. does anyone suggest not using a muffler and just running two end tips?

noobs

we are back to this huh

backpressure doesn't create torque

if you think so you might want to read up on the subject or be able to explain why it creates torque before you talk about it

when i was driving thhe car with open headers i deffinetly felt like no power, so it cant be that some backpressuere doesnt create torque.

The seat dyno can be decieving, I can assure you the car makes no more power with the addition of a muffler. It makes no sense to assume the engine will perform better with increased pumping losses due to a more restrictive exhaust...

just look at your engine as an "air pump" the better it can suck air in and the faster it can get rid of it.....The more power it makes, period, end of sentence, Game..set..match,

btw, howd you get on probation?
