What is it with LOUD?

most common question here seems to be "what would be the loudest?"
Loudest? Open heads. Next loudest, open headers. Then cutouts.
I guess I'm just getting pissed at seeing the same question with the most obvious answer.

If you want an exhaust to be loud, put more holes in it.

Well I think people want an exhaust that is louder than stock so that they can have added performace and hot rod appeal. They may also ask that because they do not want loud and peoples opinions on different systems may deter them from buying it.

well some people want opinions on everything they do, loud for me is slp 1 3/4, no cats, and slp catback.

loud for someone else is longtubes, no cats, and slp loudmouth.

its all perference and performance with opinions tacked on.

Have you ever heard open heads?

Why people want "loud" is the same reason you see sky-high spoilers and "Type R" decals on econoboxes, I'm afraid. There may be an association between loud and performance, but there isn't necessarily a correlation.

I'll admit I can't figure out why everyone wants a really loud car. I think it has to do with the fact people somehow associate loud with power. But with the way things are now, we all know that's not the case. Honestly I hear more "louder than quiet, but not loud" mustang's create a nice tone versus some of the thirdgen f-bodies I've heard. They are worse than a harley and that's just..

a volume control on exhausts would be ideal.

because noone wants loud all the time.... and most people here dont want to be dead quiet either.

im hoping to solve that issue by using a quiet catback and electrick cutouts...
i'll let you know how that works out.

yup.

and while if i had a decient cat back, it would be pointless to have somthing that loud, i will admit i do have that immature attitude that SOMTIMES its cool to be loud... hehe

plus im sure that with the engine im planning, my full exhaust will have a decient amount of backpressure.... the cutouts should help some "at the track".

My view is this: My car IS the stereo. I like to hear it. I like the soothing vibrations as I sit at a red light, I like the deep rumble it gives, the crescendo as I step into it, the feral scream as I stomp it into the firewall. It's bone-stock, pretty quiet I think. I'd like an aftermarket setup to be installed, free up some backpressure that the stock setup has, hey, true dual would be really nice. Cat-back setups here cost around 500 dollars for Flowmasters, installation included. I'd like the whole package deal at once. Not to be brazen and loud - noise doesn't get me faster. But if freeing up some lost HP makes it a little louder, oh well. I don't want to have to wear earplugs to drive, mind you...

PM me, might be able to host the file for ya

When I went down to Sac raceway on the 5th of July to watch the PSCA guys run... The most quiet car there was the fastest 6.89 at 205 mph.

I prefer a nice deep tone to extremely loud exhaust.

I'm with MetalliCamaroRS - those systems that have the great deep tone are hard to come by AND the good ones don't get real blatty and obnoxious when you get heavy footed.

And I support the point of this thread - that's why I tried to get the thread going on ranking system loudness because I for one am not interested in just loud but quality exhaust sound - I know, how do you define that - each to his own......For me it isn't quality if it's obnoxious and anoying in loudness and tonal character. Franky, some of the best sounding rides I've heard are 'Stangs - probably a result them being a true dual, but that's not reason enough for me to give up my IROC - no way ;-)

It's true that it's hard to compare one system to another - I don't even know the difference between Flowmasters American Thunder series and their Force II systems, or their different numbered series (aka 40-series, 50-series or 80-series or what ever else they have) - a good comparison of some of the major brands would be nice.

anybody heard of some muffler theyre developing that sends sound frequencies that cancel out the exhaust. i think it would be cool. 10 sec car that makes absolutely no noise

I agree with onebluemcm, I'd like to see some type of "ranking system loudness" chart, or something. I have a flowmaster, but a friend just got his "two chamber" flowmaster, and his is way louder than mine. I think mine sounds better, it's like someone mentioned earlier, his is kind of blatty. Is that a trait of GM motors, cuz I really like the way Rustangs sound.

I can't stand the unclean, hollow sound that M*stangs have. The Chevrolet engines have always had the best and meanest rumble IMO.

I like loud exhaust because when you think of a musclecar, you think of this overpowering vehicle that wants to beat up on some other cars and the sound just goes with it. I don't like when I see musclecars with no sound, even if its a nice low rumble, that's better than nothing.

i kinda agree with IROCZTWENTYGR8

when i think of our cars (american 8 cyl 'muscle cars) i think of them as the big guys on the block. i think of brute force, insane acceleration. all that energy unleashed when you mash on the pedal. yes you can be fast with a significantly quieter car than most of ours, but its to me just part of the awesomeness of it all. our cars have not only the capacity to be loud but they also sound very throaty which makes it for me. sure the 'import tuners' are loud, but in my opinion their sound is hideously annoying.

all i know is that when i got my ttops out on a nice summer night, and im cruisin and i go under an overpass i thoroughly enjoy HEARING my car!:hail: :hail:

Mustangs actually have a very sharp, cut tone to them mainly due to the dual setup. I've heard a few GM and Mopar cars that one could mistake for a Ford, all with a real dual setup. Put a last thought design single exhaust on a ford v8 and you'll have nearly the same crappy, lazy revving, mush sound of a GM v8. That single exhaust sound, no matter how you band-aid it's sound with loudness, still sounds like crap. The main driving reason for me making a dual exhaust for my car. It's not like my lowly 305 really needs to have dual 2.5" exhaust, but, the fact that is has a sound that isn't cookie cutter, like 95% of all exhaust made for these cars, is what I like the most. It's not a sound you'll ever achieve (might get similar) with a single setup either.

While the sound of a v8 will always have a better tone than that of a 4 banger, isn't trying to get the loudest exhaust possible on a car that isn't putting the power down to back the sound the same thing as most cry about import cars doing ? (i.e. a stock 305 lg4 w/the loudes flowmaster setup)

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

I like the sound of Chevy single better than M*stang dual, they just don't have that tough sound. A Chevy engine with duals is no comparison, F*rd loses again IMO.

BLAH people always ask me if i have flowmasters on my car because my car is so damn loud. I shake my head and go no i have slp headers hooked up to true duals with chambered mufflers....they tend to look kind of confused afterwards. Wish i had some form of audio recording device so i could get a sound bite and the best part is okay its the previous owner who had this done and he got the stock dual cat pipes modded so it had chambered mufflers and true duals. And thats all through the stock pipeing cant wait till i can aford to run 3" duals.

I prefer quality over quantity myself.

Like, when I do my exhaust, I don't want a cop caller thats gonna get me every single ticket the boys in blue can think up. I'd rather have a system that has a sound like a solid-lifter-big-block with the stock dual exhaust, like a '69 Camaro. I heard one of those a few weeks ago at 7-11... it was a nice white '69 SS with the solid lifter big block engine and factory duals. It was not overly loud and obnoxious, but this thing had presence

My cousin's '52 Ford is another good one... he had dual exhaust installed this summer on his 239 Flathead 8. It has a really nice, ballsy, musclular sound when you get on it, but if you are more than 10 feet away when its idleing, you can't even tell its running!

Yeah, that's the term for it... Presence. You're sitting at a light, minding your business, and you suddenly realize - a 'real' car pulled up next to you. It has rich full tone, throaty while not being overpowering, and when the light goes green, it motors away with a pleasant growl. Almost makes you want to follow it some more so you can enjoy the sound. I don't get to hear that a lot, but it's cool when I do.

oh come on. You honestly cant say that you wouldnt want to have a 79 Trans Am that made the ground shake at idle, and when driving around turned heads because it was like an earthquake. After i do my thirdgen thats what i wanna do...get a second gen Trans am and just make it into a monster.

i understand where your comming from, it just tweaks me because my car isn't stock, and i didn't do anything to make the exhaust tone change (4" into a single in/out muffler, no glass packs or anything), but it is quite a bit louder, and most people can feel it with their radios up. I hate havin people in civics pull up to me and ask if i've got a hemi or if it's got NAWSSS, and then rev me up thinking their fart can makes'em faster somehow. I don't like hearing my car's exhaust when i'm cruising down the road, it probably wouldn't be that big a problem with a 4spd, but the th350 has me at 3000rpm goin down the interstate, but i can't hear my radio worth a ****, carrying on a conversation is hard cuz you have to yell, chicks HATE it with a friggin passion, and it's hard to hear subtle engine noises...like there's no way in hell i can hear detonation...

But to each their own, if you want it loud, go for it.

To me I don't necessarily want loud just to sound deep and good. Mine with the SLP 1 3/4 headers Random Technology cats and mufflex 3.5 with Spintech muffler cat back to me is good. At wot sounds almost like a Winston Cup car. I do have a catless "Y" pipe I want to install to see how it sounds.

BTW, there are some really nice looking rides on this thread I especially like MdFormula350's Formula.

I have my Hooker 2055s, the Supercomp Catback, and a striaght pipe in place of the catalytic converter... IT'S TOO LOUD. Interior noise is friggin annoying me lately. I LOVE the sound when I hit the gas nice and hard, but general acceleration seems too loud... Should I stuff some stainless steel wool in my exhaust pipes?

I fixed two leaks in my exhaust today... wow it sounds great again. Got the collector leak fixed (a bolt fell out!) and then the makeshift straight pipe came unhooked so I tightened it. No leaks all the way back, very very nice sounding.

i know this wont make much sense, but, what about having a modified cutout on a single exhaust pipe or dual for those who love duals, and attach a quieter exhuast to one end of it and a loud exhuast (Flowmaster, Ravin or dynomax mufflers or whatever blows your skirt up) to the other end? and just b4 that cutout add another cutout for all out loudness?. I was in the market for a really loud exhuast, until i got a headache, now im thinking have the best of both worlds and a cutout but then again tahts alot of weight to add. dont know if it would work unless you like to play with pipes and welding, but it was a thought.

it one thing to be loud and its another to be obnoxiously loud, you can have power and not be super loud but the same goes for the imports they are loud and lack power.
I'd rather have power then noise but at this point i'll take both.

To me thats the way it sould be! My friend has a 94 cobra with a cam and flowmasters, to me thats the way an exhust should sound like. My camaro on the other hand had stock exhust manifolds and y-pipe with a glass pack on the end. At first it sounded good but after a month or so it sucked. You coudn't hear the radio or talk to your freinds and got the cops attion every where you went. Just my 2 cents.

My exhaust is rusting away by the muffler, so I'll see if it goes South or not, but I've got plans to do a full-blown rebuild on the exhaust system - just gotta save more nickles and dimes. (like a LOT of them...)
