AIR System

I am going to be putting Hedman LT's on my car next week and they don't have the provisions for the AIR tubes, so what do I need to do in order to get rid of the tubes and the rest of the AIR system? I have looked, and unless I am missing it I don't have the air pump but the tubes and what looks to be the rest of the system is on the car.

I am going to be running 2 1/2" pipe minus the cats with purple hornies dumping at the rear axle. Is it advisable to remove the smog pump since I am going to run the plumbing w/o the cats?

just take the air pump out (you will need an idler pulley) and you will be fine.

or, just disconnect the pipes from it and leave it there. it might get a little squeaky though after a little while.

This is the fourth post i've seen today on AIR removal, and the fourth misinformed answer. Now its time to get someome to put up a sticky.

IF YOU REMOVE YOUR AIR PUMP, AND YOU DO NOT MODIFY YOUR PROM YOU WILL RUN LEAN. YOUR CAR WILL PERFORM LESS, IT WILL RUN SLOWER.

i agree...this should be a sticky topic...there have been a lot of these posts lately.

and, if i am misinformed, then i apoligize for giving somebody the wrong information. but like i said in another post, this is the first time in 6 years of owning my car that i have heard that that removing the AIR system will make the car slower. i dont think that it widely known information on the boards.

again, sorry if i pushed somebody in the wrong direction.

Just to shed a little more light ...

1) You will NOT run lean at WOT
2) There are some part throttle light load areas where you can run slightly lean.
3) Tons of people (including me) have run without the AIR system and did not make any ECM/PROM adjustments and everything ran fine. FWIW, this was back when I was sporting the stock cam/heads and just an upgraded LTR setup. Car ran absolutely fine with no AIR and no ECM adjustments.
4) I just brought this information to light a week ago. People have been running with no AIR and no ECM adjustments for over a decade now (that's a long time!). Very Very few people have ever complained about removing AIR.

I just want to put things in perspective here. If you remove the AIR system there is a very good chance that you won't notice anything. You might ... but, fact is, you probably won't. Too many people have already done it. I am not saying that it's 100% OK to remove the AIR system. The correct way would be to disable it in the EPROM. However, you don't need to do it. You should do it ... but, it's not a terrible thing if you don't. Heck - I still haven't disabled it in mine yet.

How would you go about disabling it in the EPROM. I would like to do that since I just installed headers and left out all the AIR stuff just for engine access. Im looking for performance, not worried about mileage or highway driveability. I only drive the car to gatherings or the strip. I have a pocket programmer, Tuner CAts and some eproms. I have burnt one simple chip so far, just changing the injector constant. My base bin is an Ed wright fastchip bought a couple of years ago.
Thanks

Could you post pics and supply details on how and what parts to remove when eliminating the AIR pump.

Thanks in advance.
