Quietest muffler w/ great performance. Need help!

My car is too loud. Can't get a race w/ anyone. I'm looking for something that a lot quieter but flows very well. I've thought about the electric cut out, but I wanted to see what other options I had. Thanks.

Right now there's shorties, no cats, and a 40 series dual outlet on the car. I don't care about tips or where it exits. I'm also looking for something that doesn't weight 80#'s. So small and light weight would be great.

I agree that the Hooker Aerochamber is a good muffler, but the one I had on my car was "race car" loud. It sounded mean, but after a few years I got tired of it.

I replaced it with an Edelbrock muffler, which sounds good and is not quite as loud as the Aerochamber. But it's not exactly quiet, either.

I'll cast another vote for Dynomax.

I just got done putting my Edelbrock cat-back on. It's much quieter than my other setup (stock exhaust disconnected at the cat). It does have a nice rumble and tone, not too loud, but it can be heard when ya want it to!

I'm looking for something that sounds like stock, but doesn't flow it. And something that is small and light weight. Does that eliminate any of the mufflers suggested above?

Is the dynomax quiet? I need it to sound as close to stock as I can.

The flowmaster force II is quiet at idle and low rpm/light throttle. The muffler was pretty heavy though.

TRUST ME, the Dynomax is QUIET. On my last project I did the true dual 40 series thing and I got so tired of it. Hell, I didn't want to take my dates out in the car, because it was SO LOUD.

So with my RS I went the sleeper route, and believe me, I couldn't be happier with the Dynomax Super Turbo. It even has the stock style exhaust tips, which isn't any. It's simply turns down like stock.

I can't vouch for Edelbrock or anything else, but you should be good w/ the Dynomax, even if you don't have any cats. And as a bonus, it doesn't cost very much for their cat-back.

Can I just get the muffler? Would summit sell it like that? I'm shooting for over 650hp so I hope your right about the quiet part.

Actually I believe they do. Now as far as how to make a 650 HP motor quiet, well, I can't say that for sure. It's more of a combination of cam size and exhaust. I can promise you though that it will be more quiet than the Flowmasters.

I am interseted i the same thing. Is the Hooker system a good flowing one? Will it support 400 HP? I've heard that it sounds good but I am worried about it not flowing enough. How does it compare to flowmaster for flow?

I vote magnaflow. I just replaced my blowmaster err...flowmaster Last Friday and Wow! What a difference in power and is very quiet. It's a straight through muffler that somehow they get quiet. It's about like my stock muffler at idle. It's also polished stainless steel.

Hey 94-6spd-

Tell more about your Magnaflow. What's the model number? where did you get it? Inlet/Outlet sizes? What did you do with the exhaust tips? How did it go in - problems?

Sorry for all the questions but I'm really interested in the Magnaflows.

Oh, one other thing - what Flows did you previously have on it?

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin, I had the American Thunder series Flowmaster and it about rattled the teeth out of my head. The Magnaflow that I'm using is a 3" inlet and dual 2.5 outlets. The part number is 14267. This is for the stainless steel version. There is an aluminized steel one also. The part number for that one is 12267.

Here is the magnaflow page with the camaro mufflers on it. They are down toward the bottom of the page. First the stainless and the other is aluminized.

I got the muffler at a local muffler shop that does frontend work and exhaust. I just reused rectangle LT1 tips that came on the car from the factory. This is my 94 Z-28 that it's on. I will definitely take the Flowmaster off of my 83 Z-28 now. I didn't have any problems with installation because I just let the shop do it. Any more questions let me know. Are you running Flowmaster right now?

Hey - thanks a ton for the info - really helpful.

No, right now I'm running what looks like a GM muffler but sounds too nice to be that and honestly I haven't figured it out yet. The exhaust was probably done within the year before I bought the car and it now has a full 3" exhaust from the cat to the muffler. The muffler on it is stamped the GM logo and part number. It has a real nice sound for a GM muffler - it's hard to explain but at idle it's noticable and when you get on the gas it comes to life pretty good for a stock piece. Maybe GM used to make some descent sounding mufflers though, I don't know.

Bottom line is that it has a nice tone and is the kind of sleeper muffler I really like. I really am not in the "louder is better" band wagon but I think a Magnaflow would be a step up the ladder in loudness, tone quality and performance and that is why I'm looking at them now.

My biggest worry is that a new muffler/system will be too loud or have a crappy sound with the inherent Camaro exhaust system and it'll get torn off quickly and be a waste of money. I'll be honest with you all - My fiance like this car a lot and each modification I maks involves her too - if it was like your AT Flow system, I'd seriously be in the dog house for in her mind "screwing up the car". But it's me also - I want a sleeper muffler with a real nice tone but maybe a bit more noticable than what's there now.

Thanks alot for the info again
Kevin

I ran the 80 series flowmaster 3"inlet and dual 2 1/2"outlets but it was just too **** ing loud. I have a convert so its worse for me but I got the drone and resonance that really drove me nuts. We put a resonator in up stream of the muffler but it didn't help much. I then went to the magnaflow which was a little quieter with the resonator. I just took the resonator our for weight and maybey a little flow and now the magnaflow is too loud and I didn't notice any performance difference except maybe a little loss in the low end.

I want something quiet too like the old "turbo"mufflers we used to run in 65 impalas etc. I am currently looking at a single 3" 50 series SUV flowmaster but I am not sure about that either.

Will check out the hooker, edelbrock and dynomax super turbos.
This is a good thread.................bob

I can vouch for the Flowmaster 80's volume. Its one loud freaking muffler, and I still have stock manifolds and a converter. I would like something quieter, I've heard the SLP system on a LT4 hotcam / vortec headed beast. I've also heard the Dynomax Turbo's in person, both on TBI Camaro's, they honestly sound pretty good.

AJ_92RS has a Dynomax on his RS I beleive, you can ask him if he has any sound clips of it.

As for me, well this is what the Flowmaster 80 series sounds like. Its a high idle, about 1,000rpm cause the car hadn't fully warmed up yet.

Mine got deleted from Yahoo for some reason.

I've tried to upload them there again, but I think they cracked down and only allow pic files now.

I can try to email them to anyone, but they're pretty big files.
