glasspacks?
hello, I am looking to blow a couple gift certificates to advance autoparts. My friend Nick there recommended i go with a glasspack. I was originanally going to go with nothing after the cat but he made me take a second thought. As of now i have a 89 firebird 305 TBI with looks to be stock exhaust and stock intake. open air/xtreme top is in the works. i also have flowtech headers from year one on the way(i just want something with a LITTLE mod, and cheap as well, college is gonna sap most of my money next year). i like the idea of glasspacks because im gonna try to have an old school type feel for my car. the one ive been recommended is by thrush. i believe its 2.5" also ive been thining about adding an extra cat and having true duals with glasspacks. any thoughts would be appreciated! -chris

they sound like *** and flow even worse. you can get a dynomax bullet or moroso spiral and have the same basic size/shape muffler with a lot better flow and a way better sound.

despite the fact that i love the way glasspacks sound, and i mean real glasspacks, not cherrybombs, not a resonator, but real glasspacks. but your car will run like a dog.
a good aftermarket cat-back exhaust system is heads and shoulders above glasspacks. you will lose so much horsepower its not even funny running glasspacks.
despite the fact that my friends '68 internation pickup with a SBC 350, longtubes, 3 in. pipes, and glasspacks the size of water heaters sounds unbelievable letting off the throttle at about 4grand in 3rd gear, going through a tunnel..... the power loss just isn't worth the sound.
for those who say glasspacks are *******, are just being ignorant. because those are the same people that say they loved the 60's cars sounded (they had GLASSPACKS).
but muffler technology has come a long way since glasspacks. its 50's technology, if not older.
88iroc, has compiled a list of true dual cars, take a look at those if you want a true dual setup. there are plenty of straight through style mufflers that will give you glaspack sound with 21st century performnace. dynomax bullet mufflers are a good example.
but don't go with glasspacks, unless you like having a slow car.
im gonna go put on my flame jacket because im sure all the stupid comments are about it follow this that "glasspacks are for rednecks". let the ignornce spread

yes you can drive a L03 around with the catback off.....
it gets old, and it will seem louder to you then me, since i dont have a roof, but you can live with it for awhile.
you'll see zero improvement in 1/4 mile.... i did back2back2back2back runs at ennis one night to prove it.
if you just want it louder (and not as annoying) as TOTALLY ******* as this sounds, poke a hole or 2 in the muffler where the exhaust comes in.... once more, thats totally cheezy for sheezy mu neezy but for realzy, it betterezy then the other options you had (i orignally spelled everything like that, but i found it unreadable. :P *yay eggnog!* )
anyhoo.... a MUCH better idea to spend that $$ on..... a fire extingusher..... gas struts for front hood or rear hatch if needed..... heck even the $9.99 rear shocks are ok if yours are shot..... umm.. jsut think, whats wrong with mycar.... look in it, what doesnt work? what looks cruddy?
chances are, theres somthing that could be fixed, but you never got around to it or bothered for one reason or another.... THATS what you should spend $$ on.... well that and a fire extinguisher....

because every car should have one.
and other then a few choice name brand parts, and things in a can or bottle, theres not much in advance that i would even buy for my car......
they sell budget crap parts for budget crap cars..... *shrug*
i was just saying, if theres nothing wrong with your car, and you wanted to spend the $ there, get somthing useful...
and yes. ive had to use a extinguisher on my car twice..
once because some dick in auto shop thought it would be cute to cross some wires.. and another time, i did somthing stupid... i set the timing, and didnt replace the air cleaner before i tried to start it... it backfired and the remains of the hood matt cought on fire... i dont think it was the mat burning, i think it was the oil on it or whatever.... but needless to say, i was glad i had it.
if i didnt have one with me, my car would have burned down when i left the autoshop with thoes wires crossed....
not to mention, if you see someone on the side of the road that needs help, you can help them now... while the car is still salvageable, instead of waiting the 5-15 mins for the fire dpt and having the car be totaled.

And if you paint the fire bottle boue and make it look like a nitrous bottle, it looks cool, too!
Right along with those thing-a-majig woofers that look like nitrous bottles.
But yeah, what they said, spend the money on true needs, I sure would like to rebuild my posi first than go with exhaust stuff, and maybe I'd buy some synthetic oil for later on, too.

All glasspacks are NOT created equally. There is a huge difference between PERFORATED and LOUVERED. Check this website for flow comparisons. Specifically the 2.25 lovered vs. 2.25 inch perforated. http://www.broaderperformance.com/page4.html
Thrush(now made by dynomax) has a series of perforated glass packs that sell for very reasonable prices. But only up to 2.5 inches. So you want to go duals. The draw back is the shortest thrush glasspack is like 24 inches long. Where the dynomax bullets come in much shorter lengths.
Glasspacks got a bad reputation because Farm trucks with a single 2 inch exhaust and a low powered motor with a 2inch glasspack sounds like crap. But a healthy motor with dual 2.5 inch glasspacks just sounds mean.
JUST DON'T USE A LOUVERED GLASS PACK.

And I don't know *****, but I'm sure his car does sound good. And I don't know exactly how much a lower cfm muffler will effect final horspower. But looking down the middle of a louvered glass pack makes me cringe. I spent quite a few hours with a grinder on the exhaust ports on my vortec heads, and I just can't see sticking a muffler on a few feet from them with louvers digging into the flow. Those perferations look a lot more forgiving.
And on a side note, I also have a big dynomax muffler I used to use with a 3 inch in and 2 2.5 inch out. It is designed just like a glass pack though. It is straight through diagonally with the other pipe intersecting the straight path. Really no different than a glass pack but has the extra path to exit with. Really any straight throug design with perferations and fiberglass for sound control is a glass pack. It is PACKED with GLASS.
Funny how that old technology is considered new technology now if you call it a bullet or something.

personally, i like the way a moroso spiral muffler sounds the best, the physical size of a glasspack with a chambered sound.
