what would open heads sound like?

I am not in anyway thinking about doing this, and I know that there would probably be some valve damage or something, but something got me wondering what a V8 engine would sound like with open heads... no headers or anything.

Has anyone ever actually heard a V8 with no headers? Wonder if it would sound like gunshots at idle? and maybe... a fast gatling gun at higher RPM's? (if the engine were not in an engine bay)

I'll bet there would be some nice flames shooting out the heads!

Itis very very loud. But you would not damage your valves by running open headers.

yea, I know I have seen people run open headers

I wonder if it would sound like a bunch of really fast explosions? I mean, there are no pipes to alter the sound or bounce the sound around.

Man, if I ever get alot of money and time on my hands, I'm gonna try this out on a beater engine :lala:

Well it probably won't run very long because there isn't anything to help scavange the exhaust out of the chamber. It will probably choke itself out. Thats the purpose of exhaust manifolds/headers. As for sound, I bet you would hear a rush of air. Gas does not explode in the combustion chamber but you may be able to distinguish the sound of every chamber fire. That would be my geuss.

if you could set the idle low enough, and retarted the timing so that its still burning as the exhaust valve opened, it would look pretty cool... you could see the valve open and the burning gas rush out......

athough id imagine the sound would be very similar to short zoomie headers.

Actually its still buring as the exhast valve opens. It shoots about 10 to 20 inches of flames right out the side of the engine. Its not really any louder than running just headers.

Yeah we ran a t bucket at my school without headers. Whats really cool is the big detroit diesels that are two strokes. Those will make your ears ring for about an hour.

Yes, running without any type of exhaust manifold/header would burn the exhaust valves.

Nearest comparison to what it would sound like? How about firing a machine gun down a concrete corridor? Closest I can think of. It is certainly LOUD!!!! Does make for a pretty show in a dark garage though...... LOL
