O2 Sensor Location

Where would the O2 sensor be located on my stock 86 IROC?

Yup. You should be able to see it with your hood open and you looking down at the bottom part of your exahust manifold.

Ok. Thanks. I had my car in the shop for a check engine light and I noticed my gas milage getting bad. I told them to check the O2 sensor and they said that it was because my cat is gutted. Is there any truth to this? He said because it is gutted it isn't getting hot enough, which I knew, and the sensor wouldn't read right. I was just wondering if the sensor was on the cat since he said that. I was planning on getting the Edlebrock TES headers is there a fitting for the O2 sensor on them? Thanks for all of the help.

That should only be true for rear O2's of which we don't have. Rear O2's will read funny because of no cat and the temp difference but not front ones. Your O2 is plenty far away from the cat to have an effect on it.

The cat is downstream from your O2 sensor. It should have no detrimental effect on your fuel economy.

Other advice - find another mechanic. If he told you an untruth like that you really don't want to trust this guy on much of anything else...

they are coated, heheh, and by you! i dont have the best camera for digital pics.

sorry to bring up the old post but it seems like my o2 sensor hole is on the wrong side of the header. Its located on the side that will face the firewall, not the side that faces the accesories like is on the maniflod right now. Did hooker weld the collector on backwards or is there something special we're supposed to do to it to make it fit? that wire connecting to the o2 sensor looks pretty tight as it is, i dont think it will reach around to be in the back. If you have questions about what im trying to describe just ask and i'll try to get pics up by tonite.

My headmans are not hookers.... -er, my headers are Headmans...

My headers came with the bung for the O2 senson facing the firewall. They also came with a wire to extend the stock O2 sensor wire and make the connection...

There was NO clearance problem with my headers and with the wire extension it was no problem connecting the sensor up...

Hope this helps!

The extension wire was very similar to the wire coming off the O2 sensor. I couldn't tell you what that wire was but it was something that handled high heat. You might give ACS a call or email. Since they coated your headers they should be glad to help. I found them to be VERY HELPFUL when I purchased my headers from them. As connections go they connected with clips that mated up with the existing connectors in the system...

If you have a "Speed Shop" in your area you might check with them. This is a very common issue when installing headers.

Shouldn't matter

It shouldn't matter if the sensor location is on the other side. The result would be a long wire run or re-routing of the wire between the O2 sensor and the computer...
