It goes to the smog pump, delete this pump (see elswhere on this board), and get rid of the small hose as well!!

I believe that goes to an O2 sensor or smog pump. If you have to smog the car you need it. If not???

The air tube goes to the back of your smog pump on your accessory brackets. It adds air to the cat to help with the chemical conversion in there. That is the non technical way of explaining it to keep it simple. It also has a diverter valve that sends the air at certain times. If you remove the cat just leave it open. It will just pump air into the atmosphere. You may just want to tie it down so that it doesn't bang around. If you are removing the AIR system than that tube will come out.

lets kick this dead horse some more. I'm at the car right now, but I thought there was a hose that went from the a/c unit to the pump as well. what do you do with that?

No. The AC and smog are two differnt set-ups completely detached from each other.
