I just bought the hedman y-pipe and the hooker catback for the '83-85 f-bodies but my question now is there a catylic converter that will connect from the y-pipe to the 4 bolt flange on the cat-back.
Only reason I ask is cause I would prefer not to have to weld up a slip fit setup.
I know mark-a-shields is gonna reply so what did you have to get done mark? I'll post pics if you guys need a visual.

Thanks alot

The post-***** don't come by these parts much anymore.

Okay, just curious: Why did you get the '83-'85 cat-back? Send it back, get the '86-'90 TPI single cat application cat & cat back, then it'll all fit together. The cat inlet is slip-fit, but the cat to I-pipe will be 2 bolt flange.

well to tell ya the truth it was about $55 cheaper an I plan on trying a few different things such as a cut out, slip fit catylic converter and maybe one of those bullet mufflers just to find that sound i like. I really only need that catylic converter to pass the jersey emissions.

matter of fact I took a picture for all of you who don't know what the four bolt flange and the hedman Y-pipe don't look like. Oh and even though I bought it I don't reccomend that Y-pipe to anyone who needs one that is 3" .

Hey...I have an 84 Trans Am with an L69. I got Hooker 2055's and Y with a 3in slip fit carsound cat. I am looking into getting the hooker cat back but I am not sure which to get...

16820..F-Body 305 83-92 (H/E) $265.99
16822..F-Body 305 HO 83-85 $207.99
16823..F-Body 305 TPI 86-92 $262.99

Shifty said that I can't use the first because it is for H&E engine codes...and I have a G.

He also said for me to get the bottom one because it is 3in all around but it has a flange...so then all I should do is cut off the flange and I should be okay. Can anyone else confim this, because I just want to make sure before I buy? Also then why is the 16822 $50 cheaper?

well to make the 18622 fit you would have to make a cut about 3-4" back from the flange the from there you could do a slip fit 3" pipe or you could or a welded pipe with or without a 3 bolt flange like i'm considering.

why do you have to cut so far back...why can't you cut right behind the flange so you only loose like .25in?

I don't know if you noticed that the flange is oval. and for anyone that is wondering the oval is 2.5x3.5 also the reason you have to cut back is at the flange it is 3.5" so you have to go upstream and cut when it is three inches.
just look closely at the picture.

by the way you only have to cut it if you are doing a setup like me, otherwise it will just bolt up if you have this setup.

If the one you pictured is the....
16822..F-Body 305 HO 83-85 $207.99

Then is this one set up any different?
16823..F-Body 305 TPI 86-92 $262.99

I could be wrong but I believe that one is the regular two bolt flange but you can't quote me one that.

So then the only difference is that one has a 2 bolt flange and the other a 4 bolt flange?

the 16822 is an oval flange the rest are round and I believe they use a doughnut seal or gasket whatever you call it.

now we are getting somewhere....So now that I know I can't use
16820..F-Body 305 83-92 (H/E) $265.99
because wrong engine code
and
16822..F-Body 305 HO 83-85 $207.99
because I have a circular Y pipe and the flange is oval

Then this is the what I need for sure...
16823..F-Body 305 TPI 86-92 $262.99

Just one last question..since I have to cut a few inches down the I-pipe then do I have to go to an auto store and buy a piece of 3in pipe? Or does the geometry of everything align without any extra pieces?

to use the 16822 on a slip fit setup you will have to cut it back then weld up the 3" pipe. listen it's late and I gotta sleep but I look into all of this tommorow and give you a detailed answer.

I don't know what you have for a y-pipe but if it's a 3" slip fit it will go on fine but if you are gonna use any of those hooker catbacks I believe that you are gonna have to cut and maybe weld. i believe that the stock I-pipes are not slip fit.
but what you can do is if you get a direct fit catylic converter you will be able to pick your cat back from there.
now if you wanna keep that slip fit catylic converter you could just get the16822 and like I said cut back a few inches until the pipe is 3" in diameter and completely round then weld up a small pipe or you could just mod the other ones.
