Can't remove Cat?
I'm installing SFC's and I have to remove the cat to install the passenger side frame connector.
Well I got all the bolts off and every thing and the damn thing still won't come off. I hammered the **** out of it and it still won't come off. It just seems like it's stuck to the y-pipe.
It's supposed to be a slip on cat isn't it?
What do I have to do to get it off?
My exhaust is all stock except for the muffler.

Just take out the whole y-pipe. It will be much easier. Althought it is a slip fit it is also crimped slightly. This crimp makes it impossible to slide off. Just dissconnect the y-pipe from the collectors and lower the whole unit.

How do you get the cat off if you have to change it? I ask because I think the cat is looking like the culperate for my emmissions problems.

Finally got mine off. I just used a torch and cut the thing off right at the y-pipe. Damn that thing sounds good now!

The way to take it off without butchering is to heat the inlet of the convertor with a torch until it is half glowing, and then you rotate the cat back and forth until it slides off (I put in my time at a couple of exhaust shops early in my career).

Yeah, you're definitely approaching this job the wrong way. I just installed alston sfc's in my car and had to get the cat out of the way. It's insane to try and remove the cat from the y-pipe when you can drop the whole y-pipe with the cat still attached to it in about 10 minutes. If you have trouble getting the nuts to loosen where the collector flanges are, you can do what I did. I sprayed some penetrating oil on the nuts, then started the car and ran it for a couple of minutes to get the exhaust nice and hot. Then you can usually loosen the nuts quite easily while they're still hot. Basically the same principle as using a "hot wrench". If you hammered the shzt out of the cat like you said, you better make sure the honeycomb stuff inside hasn't come loose, or you'll have a clogged exhaust. If it did come loose, just break it up with chisel or a long screwdriver and dump it out the back of the cat before you put the y-pipe back on.
