Header "bolt" question

I need to get some bolts for my SLP headers.

Since I plan on using some of the accessories/braces that used to attach to the exhaust manifolds, and since the SLP headers have the appropriate spacers for those accessories/braces, I need a few different length bolts.

I went to the Home Depot, and I found the perfect bolts. They are stainless steel allen head bolts, and they have all the right lenghts. My question is are the bolts strong enough? All the bolts that came factory were grade 5 bolts. Does anyone know?

This is not a daily driver, so I'm not real concerned about having to tighten them every now and then, but a broken bolt in the block would sure suck.

Hmm....a little bump for you. I'm doing headers, heads, camshaft, intake.....umm.......I took to down the short block, so I think thats everything right?

You ever figure out if those bolts would have worked?

Hi Chris. I used the same Allen head bolts when I installed mine, and although they look great, they're a bitch to get tight since you can't get to all of them with an Allen socket. I'm replacing mine at the moment and I'll be going to ARP stainless hex bolts and the stock accessory bolts where they're needed. I'm also installing a set of dead soft aluminum gaskets since the Fel Pros didn't hold up. The bolts will be strong enough, no problem. Another problem I had was that the heat "sprung" my lockwashers so I'll have to replace them too.

Well, like Ed said, you can't reach all the bolts with the allen head socket. I have a combo of allen head and 12 point bolts, like the ones in the kit.

I'm using the SLP gaskets, and I guess we'll see what happens. My engine was down to the shortblock too, and it's not quite all back together yet!

Yeah, mine is still apart right now. Infact, I've got oil covered rags sitting in the cylinder bores where I can. No rust on my new shortblock PLEASEE!!!!

Its only been apart for about a day now, the heads came off yesterday around lunch, and its about 9:30am now. So, its not like I'm leaving them apart for any great deal of time.

What size bolt do I need to look for? And what thread pitch should I get?

Granted, I have one of the old manifold bolts I can take with me, but it would save some time if I didn't have to try 10 different bolts.
