Need y pipe help

i searched y pipe for a few hours over this board and didnt really answer my questions

how much would it cost to have a 3 inch y pipe made for my z28?

i have headers and a current 2 1/2 pipe

also how much total do you think it would cost to have a y pipe made and to put on a muffler and cat that i provide so all they would do is weld the stuff on and provide the pipe i got the muffler and cat?

just like ballpark numbers

i went to a auto repair place not really a exhaust shop but asking for a good estimate he said just for the y pipe it would be cheaper to buy new headers since they come with y pipe

You can get non-emissions-legal Hedman hedders with a y-pipe for a little over $200.

Anything else with a y-pipe will be over $300.

If your current y-pipe has 2-1/4" downpipes, it would probably be cheaper and quite adequate to just have the current "Y" cut off and one that goes to 3" after the Y welded in.

Otherwise, prices quoted on the board range from $65 to $300. Most custom y-pipes fabricated by muffler shops that have had pics posted here are pretty poor efforts.

Ouch. That goes beyond ugly.

Two 2-1/2" (or even 2-1/4") into one 3" is fine. You don't need 3" downpipes.

Getting a decent one fabricated seems to be a challenge. That appears to be a muffler shop job (looks familiar for some reason). Getting it done by a performance exhaust shop that knows what to do will put you back in the mode suggested by the repair shop.

well i was browsing the internet found a flowtech y pipe i dont know the outlet though no sites seem to have info on it its under 100 bucks 11102Y part number. im not positive it will bolt onto my headers thats the problem.

do you think i would gain anything from going to 3 inch with a cat or would a new ypipe and muffler and keeping the cat off be good enough??????

i dont wanna over do the pipe size so 3 inch custom y pipe cat muffler or new good y pipe not custom no cat new muffler ? would i notice the differnce i got about 250hp at the fly

The ypipe that came with my flowtech headers is only 2.5" after they join (going into the cat) which is smaller than my stock one (3") and the design is no better than stock. Not sure if it's the same one though.

The best way to fabricate one yourself is with pieces of 2-1/2" & 3" straight pipe, mandrel 2-1/2" & 3" bends, and a Flowmaster 2-1/2" to 3" Y. Your search should have uncovered one done in such a fashion.

Based on your photos above, you'll notice a difference even with a collapse bend (like the one at the shop you're talking about) fabricated y-pipe.

found what you were talking about

its about halfway down on this page

http://www.motorsporttech.com/fbody_exhaust01.asp

35 bucks doesnt seem too bad

so

60 for cat
30 for muffler
35 for y pipe thingy
3 inch piping????
2 1/2 inch piping i can reuse from current system
100 bucks welding

225+ 3 inch piping not to bad for a magnaflow cat dynomax muffler and a solid looking y pipe

thanks for the help guys u can contribute more if you like on around the price for enough 3 inch piping for a cars full exhaust

If you need the mandrel bends, there's a guy on ebay that sells 'em pretty cheap under the name Ubendman. About $14 for 2.5" and $15 for 3".

I replaced the Y pipe on my LG4 with a 3" (IIRC) Y pipe from a carbureted IROC. (A TPI Y pipe won't work). Again, IIRC, that replacement Y pipe is stainless steel. On a high perf engine I've been told that mod can be worth up to 30 horses.

Buy the Hedman Y-pipe, and chop off the main pipe right in the middle of the collector... where the 2 down pipes meet. You do this because the main pipe is only 2.5", but if you cut it in the middle of the collector, you can get a 3" outlet.

Thats what I did with mine.
