Getting ready to buy aftermarket exhaust, HELP!
Hey guys i know its been awhile since my last post but i've just been really busy with college and everything. Basically I will be getting some money soon and my 89 Formula 305TPI Firebird needs new exchaust. I'm currently running the stock exhaust still and the car has 115 miles on it. It has holes from the manifolds back to the muffler. He's really loud and I would like to have lil less noise while driving. Dont get me wrong I like the growl but i dont need it too loud. I'm looking at getting headers, cat-conv., and muffler with dual outlets. I'm not looking at ceramic coated headers either, just black ones will do for now. And i would like to run the system at 3inchs, because i already have a catco cat that is 3 in and out. But i heard 3inch may be too much for my 305. I would like to spend like $400-450 on the whole system if possible but can go over. I figure this shop i know will do it for $200. Give me some ideas guys?
Also the car is running rough (occasional stall and loss of power) and i took it to a shop and they said its because of the holes in the manifolds before the o2 sensor you think the new setup will fix it that?
Thanks GUYS

Just buy your stuff made for a TPI car. That way it will come with full 3" piping. Are you sure the cat you have now is 3"? I didn't think the stock piping on a 305 TPI car was 3". $450 is not going to get you very far. I would look for used exhaust parts if that is your budget. You really don't want to skimp on cheap headers. All of us who have cheap headers can't wait to get rid of them.

Guys I understand how much better the ceramic coated headers are but right now I just can't afford to drop 390 dollars on them. Can wew move on and atleast leave something I can work with. I appreciate you guys opinions and no offense.

I have the stock stuff on the car, I already have a cat. conv not currenty on the car sitting on my desk that i got from my friend for 20bucks, that one is 3in in and out. The one on the car is gutted and is the stock 2.25 or whatever.
I been looking around on ebay and I'm finding alot of systems but most are 2.5 inlets and 2.25 dual outlets. You think it would be a bad idea if I went and put the 3inch cat on and ran it too a 2.5 inch intermidiate pipe. I know it would prolly just run like a 2.5 inch but it would save me some money.
See a heres a 3inch inlet:

now the competition 2.5inlet:

A full 3" system works very well with a 305 and will bolt right up to the stock cat, which is 3" in and out, or your new 3" replacement cat without modification(providing it's 20 3/4" long, which is the length of the stock cat).
And the intermediate pipe on the stock system is 2 3/4" and reduces to a 2 1/2" muffler inlet. So that muffler/tail pipe exhaust will also work.
So spending wisely, if your current intermediate pipe is still good, use your new 3" cat, spend the hundred on the muffler/tail pipe, and then spend the rest on your headers. That oughta get you something decent, I'd think.

So the stock intermdiate pipe I have now is 3in, i didnt realize that i thought it was smaller. Any suggestions for mufflers? I will take a look at my current intermidiate pipe and check the condition.

I'd go with Flowmaster or Edelbrock. Try to listen to a few different exhausts before you buy.
