Stock 305TPI Exhuast specs

Hey guys I'm bout to upgrade my exhuast system from headers to muffler. I want 3 in all the way through. Is the stock intermediate pipe 3inches or 2 3/4 inches. I cant seem to get a consistant measurement. Because I will be running a high flow Catco Conv. at 3 in. Also what are the headers you guys recommend for a 305TPI engine. I dont want to break the bank, does not have to be chrome or ceramic.

The factory I-pipe was basically 2-3/4". Most aftermarket cat-backs are 3". The direct-fit Catco will have 3" inlet and outlet.

The Hooker 2055's are about as inexpensive as you want to go. They will bolt on, have everything you need to install, and have arguably the best y-pipe out there. About $360 from Summit black painted. Go cheaper, and you'll pay for it.

with

I'm just getting confused on which headers to buy because most of the sellers do not specify if the headers will work with a tpi engine or carbed. Any help I would appreciate it. Thanks

My stock 1987 305 TPI came with 3" pipes from the Cat. Header choice would be 1 5/8 for a 305 then go with 3" cat and 3" exhaust.

1st link: Pass. Tiny primaries, no A.I.R., no y-pipe. They're Flowtechs (not a good choice, a search will tell you why).

2nd link: Pass. Only works with Flowtech headers (not a good choice, a search will tell you why).

If you would have looked futher, you would have found: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33631 . Still a pass.

If you find a new set of Hooker 2055 headers on ebay (make sure they are complete), consider them. Most ebay shipping will cost you more than ordering from Summit or Jegs - don't forget that. Customer support from Summit & Jegs is hard to beat.

DJP i believe you are refering to the stock I-PIPE, i thought that was 2 3/4inches, will that work for a 3in cat to a 3in inlet on a flowmaster muffler?

Also do the hooker 2055 headers for 360bucks from jegs come with the y pipe too?

The stock I- pipe was 3" on my 87 305 TPI which I replaced two times and they were all 3". I have since replaced everything with SLP 1 3/4 headers, 3" in & out Catco cat, and SLP 3" catback exhaust.

Please help me guys I really need help, can u help me find some. I dont really car about the brand i just need a 3in collector with a y pipe. Are there anyother headers with a 3 inch collector?

hooker 2055's do come with a y-pipe, probably the best one out there at that. they are the headers to get.

At the risk of repeating myself: THE HOOKER 2055's INCLUDE THE Y-PIPE. IT IS ARGUABLY THE BEST Y-PIPE OUT THERE.

Don't mean to shout, but trying to get the message across.

Don't believe the on-line catalog pictures. The Hooker 2055's include the y-pipe, even if the on-line catalog picture doesn't show it.

Update: This is what I found at summit, this is what I want correct?

For black painted, HOK-2055HKR (they've added the "HKR" suffix lately, used to just be HOK-2055). Looks like the price has crept up, too.

Ceramic coated are HOK-2055-1HKR.

Looks like they've finally gotten the correct picture with the description (painted only - ceramic page still has a "generic" photo).

FWIW, I didn't use the supplied gaskets. I got Fel Pros because the Hooker gaskets intrude into the header primary ports. When I asked them about that, I was told, "The extra gasket material will burn off fairly quickly." I didn't think much of that response.

This was all 3 years ago, so things may have changed a little since then.

Well I took my car into a shop last week, and it sat there for like 3 days. And all the guy did is try wetting the bolts, than I guess he was worried he would break the bolts and the evaporator was in the way. So I took the keys back from the moron and drove it to another shop, finally found a nice shop and I dropped it off on yesturday morning. The guy working on it also a thirdgener a 91 firebird 305tpi. Well I guess they finally got working on it and they got the passenger side manifolld off and were almost done with the driver side one. So it wont be dont till monday most likely. Luckly I am using my rommate truck for the weekend since he is working the whole weekend. Is there anything else I should do or tellt he guys at the shop to do, like getting longer spark plug wires or moving the starter. I heard people have difficulty with them afterwards alot.
