JR headers

Hi all,

Is anyone using JR headers? What can you tell me about them? I'm having a tough time finding out anything about them on the internet.

Thanks

Sorry, I don't have a link either. I've tried finding them with Google as well but when you search for "JR" you tend to get all kinds of irrelevant stuff.

Any reason why you might want these mystery 3rd gen headers?

Out of all the places I've phoned, they are the cheapest. I know that doesn't always mean good quality, but I wanted to find out what I could so I could make an informed purchase.

Flowtech and Dynomax both make $99 headers for 3rd gens but you really don't want to go cheap, I have them and regret it. Buying cheap headers will come back to haunt you.

Yeah you're right about quality, hence the reason I was asking for opinions. My supplier said that they were for an 82-85 Trans Am/Camaro.

If you want cheap get flowtechs, 89 bucks for the headers, 89 bucks for the y pipe. If you want good headers, dont get flowtech! Seriously, I got the cheapo flowtechs, and while they perform ok, thier fitment was horrible. The collectors hit the rails on both sides, I could have done better welds, and the flanges that bolt to the engine were warped. It took me like an hour to bolt on headers, while the engine was on the stand!! Do yourself a favor, and at the very least spend on some hedmans. They seem to be the cheapest, and they still work good.

yep, I just had to go with the best buy whn Ibought mine. If it didnt matter cost, I would have me a set of SLP's. But, as I have said before, I am poor so I love my flowtechs. After all the key to happiness isnt having what you want, its wanting what you have.

Actually, I was thinking of a set of Hedman's. They'd probably need modding for my car so they'll fit as I've got a right hand drive Trans Am. Either that or I go custom headers.

A while ago someone posted about how he put Edelbrock TES headers in his ~87 GTA and pipes for cylinders 4 and 6 needed changing but that was it. I tried to contact him but I never got a response.

Yeah, it's the steering shaft that's causing me grief, it gets in the way of off the shelf headers. The power steering box itself is from a Holden HQ.

lol

I've got a homepage where you can see some pics of my car before I started fiddling with it. Go to http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/~acorn/sam and then click on "The car" on the left hand side.

Also, check out these pics, the second one is where my steering shaft is in relation to the exahust manafold. Pretty close isn't it?

BlackBeauty-- Thanks for posting those pictures. Thats the first passenger side drive 3rd gen engine compartment I have ever seen. Look really interesting. I bet changing the fuel pump is a real PITA.

sellmanb - Yep, they are stock electric seats, but not for the 1982 year. I got them from an 89 GTA and retro fitted them and they work nicely. When my studies for this year have finished I'm going to make a remote control for the passenger's seat. Why? Cos I can.

ljnowell - No worries. If you go to the link I posted above you can see more picture of the car, even a shot of the engine bay. I did have to change the fuel pump once but I didn't think it was difficult. The steering shaft didn't get in the way fortunately. What is a PITA however, is pulling out the heater core to fix it. I can't think of a worse job I've ever had to do.

I changed my heater core back in 2000, and it was a massive PITA. I have done lots of worse things, but that one was right up there. However, I would rather change the heater core than drop the gas tank.

That's no kidding. If some people put half as much effort into doing things right as they do halfassing, they would have much nicer cars.
