Coating Headers

I got a new pair of Hooker 2055 Headers. I am planning on coating them. I ordered "Black Satin" from Tech Line. I want to be able to coat the entire header. Is there any ideas on how to remove the tags that are on the headers as seen in the picture.

Why would you want to remove them?

I want to remove them so I can coat the header. Or should i just paint over them? I'm using the black satin stuff from tech line. I didn't think it would be a good "seal" if i painted around the tags. So i just thought i could remove them. And then paint the headers.

Ha, I just got my 2055s and was going to do the same (use something from techline) and was wondering about the tags also.

Are you going to "coat" them, or paint them?

If you're getting them coated, don't worry, they'll clean them thoroughly and the coating will stick just fine.

If you're painting them, clean them thoroughly and paint away.

I painted mine over 3 years ago. The tags are fine.

There's no need to remove the tag (usually tack welded on anyways) unless you just don't like the look of it.
I've done a few headers with tags and haven't any problems using Cermakrome. The 'birds...

Hand polished as there are no polising compaines here (that have vibratory polishers for makeing a 'JetHot' shine to it..)

There are two on mine. I think one is a C.A.R.B street legal number and a hooker one (2055s) and they're crappily riveted on.

deadbird,

How did you coat the inside? How did you "polish" the inside?

Reason I ask is I ceramic coat headers also. and the Main Reason for ceramic coatings is the protective coating as you know. but what alot of people dont know is when you VIBRATORY polish the headers ya it gets the sterling look. BUT its main reason is to burnish the coatings and SEAL the headers. Inside and Out.

Im not bashing, just curious how you guys who dont use a vibratory are doing things.

I use all of techline products,
CBX,TLML,TurboX,WSX,DFL1,MCX,Cermakrome,and CERMASEAL.

Edit: wow I cant spell in the AM

Well i was going to coat them myself. But in order to coat them I first need to "paint" the header. I don't know whether to remove the tags then paint it or to paint right over them. I'm going to use black satin from tech line.

The tags look like they are about to come off anyway. They are bending up on the sides. I think I'm just going to take a screwdriver and pop them off unless someone gives me any other ideas.

Chris... I didn't bother with the inside of the headers because I've only coated a few pair, mainly the personal few I've switched through, and 1 for a friend. The other reason is when I did them, the guy who rebuilt my motor let me make use of his engine shop, blast booth and block oven so I tried to go as quick as I could. At the time, half was much better than none at all.

As far as the polising part... I didn't get all **** about it being beautiful bright so I just worked them over pretty quick with some rough steel wool then went to it with some eagle1 w/rouge. Best a po'man can do I suppose in a city that doesn't have jack unless you're looking for a resturant or gas station...

Sealing the coating is one thing I guess I left off (9hrs of work & 5 more in the garage + a few beverages and that tends to happen ). IIRC, it says it right on the bottle.

thats cool. I was just wondering..

I did a set for a buddy who just wanted quickie job and polished em out himself. Not the best way since it kinda defets the purpose of doing the inside. but they look 100x better then they did.

Make sure those rivets don't go through the header if you pop 'em off, or you might end up with some holes, unless you're going to weld them up.
Deadbird... excellent job with that cermakrome. I tried it once about 8 years ago and messed it all up. Some of it chipped off and I didn't polish it good.... I had no patience back then.

Thanks ice... I barely have the patience myself but... at the least.. it's worth the price of admission for learning the process.

Chris.. no prob bud.. I know you didn't mean anything by your asking and it wouldn't bother me even if you did, as you've been extremely helpful in answering my questions, in more detail than I would have expected, I've asked you.

I just did my set of 2055s too, although I additionally removed the AIR equipment. As for the tags, ya I didn't like them too much either. I got a 'sharp' screwdriver and gave it a good whack from the 'inside' underneath of the tag with a hammer and it busted through the weld (mine were tach welded I believe). I used some ceramic coating I got from Columbia Coatings and it turned out well. I cleaned them up with a clean rag, and although they don't look polished by any means, they do look pretty good IMO, a lot better than the last pair I did with the same stuff (didn't clean them up after coating last time). I'll grab some pics when I go home this weekend.

Hehe you bought the 8oz bottle from Brian hey....

If you guys want ceramakrome e-mail me. I can get it for a FRACTION of the cost he does.

a GALLON cost about what you paid for 8oz from him.

I buy powder from him now and then.
