Making exhaust more. Quiet..

I know this is taboo among most folks, but i've never really been into noise.

My last setup was just out right obnoxious.

Anyone have any hints or suggestions on making my car a little less noisy, without losing too much power? (more than 5-8hp).

It's been suggested in previous posts trying those header inserts from Jegs and Summit. Suppsedly you put them in the collector and it will lower your db's without sacraficing hp. Does it work? Who knows, nobody ever posts back when asked about this but it's worth a shot. Does it work with shorties? Not sure but it could be looked into.

If your not running a cat, possibly putting a high flow unit will lower your noise level a little.

Hope that helps.

Or you can do what I did, and run a cutout before the stock muffler.

perhaps you're not catching on.

when is the ONLY time the performance diff of a stock muffler vs any other muffler measurable?

at the track.

if you want a real liveable setup, do what alot of guys do..

run a stock exhaust, and get a electric cutout.

when you want to be loud, its loud.. and depending on where you put it, your motor, ect... it doesnt sound bad.

when you want it to be quiet, you just flip the switch and the cutout closes.

i only open mine at the track... athough occasionaly i'll open it to scare the **** out of some ***** who just reved at me... (i wont run him on the street, but its fun none the less....)

before you dismiss it as ******* trailer trash, do some research on the subject... you wont come off as ignorant that way

some to get you started:

btw the inserts are there for race cars that need "mufflers" to be legal.

they wont make your car any quieter.

You could try putting a resonator in your exhaust system right behind the cat where the pipe it fairly straight. I would think that would bring the sound level downj a bit.

Get the biggest magnaflow you can fit on there. Do NOT use the collecter inserts. I've seen some guys on another board use various ones.... on a pretty stout 350 it'd barely accelerate, and on another the exhaust flow bent the fins on it!

I can't use cut-outs at the track. DOT approved mufflers for all entries..

Thanks. I'll keep looking around.

I would put a Dynomax Bullet between the Cat and muffler somewhere.

I second that. Another small muffler or resonator will help.

ok

another option, i have a friend that does this.

put a stock muffler on. (i reccomend the later 4thgen Z28 ones)

put a flange on where the I-pipe goes into the muffler.

at the track, you can drop the heavy muffler and bolt on a bullet (or somthing of that nature)

lil more work, but you also get the weight loss...

I just put a Flowmaster Super 40 on my GTA. Not loud but still makes good tone.
