Welcome aboard my friend!
This is a good question. The best way to avoid this problem is to buy exhaust componets tailored for TPI applications. That way they will all come with 3" piping and 3" adapters. If not, the kit you buy will have nice pipe size but with a reducer mated to the end in order to attach to exisitng stock exhaust components. Some people choose this route because they only have intentions of replacing one part of their exhaust. If you change everything from the headers back to the tailpipe all at one time, the TPI applications are what you want. If not, you will have to buy the kit that matches your car so that it mates to your existing components. When you choose to add further parts you can simpy cut off the reducer and connect the two however you wish (weld, clamp, band ect). You can also mix and match brands because they are all basically tailored in the same fasion and follow the same route with the same amount of parts.

Edelbrock Headers
The Edelbrock headers(summit p/n EDL-6874). This is a great setup that also includes the matching y-pipe for only $350. They also have all the smog crap and heat risers that match the factory locals if you are in a smog conceince area. If not just clamp the ends. That is what I did. These should match up well with almost anything. I'm running them with a dynomax system that has a 3" intermediate pipe.

I like Shifty's suggestion better.
Although those headers are for the L69, they will not bolt up to the LG4 system. You could get the rest of the system for the L69 application, but you're going to have to get a different EFE valve, and the EFE valve is one of the huge restrictions in the LG4 system.
Whatever you do, don't get any exhaust pieces that are intended for the LG4 application.

available for all applications
The p/n I gave for that setup was for 83-86 305 H.O. If you look in the Summit catalog there are about 10 different listings all for camaros, mostly thirdgens. I listed to the p/n that fit his description.
QUOTE]what application would you suggest for a 1984 camaro z28. it still has the stock 305 in it.[/QUOTE]
That includes the setups made for the TPI,305 or 350, single or dual cats, you name it. I have yet to find anyone else that offers a complete setup like this made to fit out of the box. Not that one doesn't exist.
