Painting Headers
i was in autozone the other day and i see they had some 1400* high temp paint...and i'm pretty sure headers don't exceed that and i was thinking about painting my headers with some of that stuff...anybody ever try this? does it still flake off? i don't want to turn this into a big argument about why i should get my headers jet hot coated or anything like that cuz that isn't happening....i just want to know if any of you guys have tried this paint and how it worked...

You have to follow the directions to the T. And then it still may flake a little. If you do a search you will find the same question asked and basically some reviews on it.
Make sure the pipes are cleaned. Make sure you cure the paint or it will flake.

Yes, you have to use the 'baking' directions, or it won't stay on... I did my headers 3 times like that... paint, bake, cool, paint, bake, cool.... so they should hold up pretty well.

I used the oven in my house... my shorties just barely fit in there though.
That **** stinks like nothing else too... open ALL the windows if you do this.

I wonder if a local paint shop could do that for you. Paint them with high temp paint and bake them. That probably wouldn't be very cost effective if they even do.

They do make a HI TEMP powder but dont let them talk you into it. I am a Ceramic,Thermal and Powder coater. I own my own company.
The hi temp powder looks like crap. I wont even use it. and tell people that want it to goto soandso.. Id reather turn the $$ away then powdercoat headers with junk. and for what You would pay to have em hi temp powdercoated I can ceramic coat them.

In the past, we've always used VHT hi-Temp paint, cleaned the headers and dried, set them in front of a kerosine/torpedo heater and get them warm. Spray the paint on, set them in front of the heater again till they're warm/dry and do it again.
They seem to hold up pretty well, I've never had them flake, crack, peel. Only problem we had since we drive them is moisture. driving in the rain, frequent under hood washing will eventually cause some surface rust, but that's to be expected for a car that actually gets used frequently.
We've gotten one set of headers back from Jet-Hot last month, $18 to ship there and $13 to ship back(they must have a volume discount with Fed-EX) and $275 for the coating itself-this stuff is second to none, but not practical when on a budget.

not practical at all!...maybe i'll try that bullet heater method you said...that sounds easy enough....does anybody know if they make a sweet looking header wrap or sleeve type thing that I could just put over my headers? because then it would keep the engien bay temps down too....but the traditional header wrap that you see everywhere looks like your headers are dressin up for holloween as a mummy or something....or your headers just got TPed...looks terrible IMO....that would be awesome if they made some kind of zip up sleeve or something, or maybe they do??

You want to stay away from that if your planning long term with these headers and will street drive it. They trap in the heat and ALSO trap in moisture that will eventually start the rusting process since it has no place to go. They're a good concept, just bad for a street type car.

You can do a PARTIAL cure in front radient heat. like the propain lamp heaters. and when you run them on the car it will fully cure.
I use TURBO X is the highest temp product on the market now for Turbo specific aplications. I do a pre cure at 500* for 1hr in the Oven. and Then they fully cure on the car when fired up and run.
It can be applied and AIR dried. You dont HAVE to do a pre cure at 500*. You can just let them dry and put em on the car.
techline coatings is who I get all my coating supplies from.
$275 is alot from JET HOT. I charge $200 + shipping on shorties. and $225 on Long Tubes.. and Give a Lifetime warrenty on new parts. 3year on used.
klum, feel free to give me a call if you need some pointers or help. My PH# is on my website. Id be more then happy to help ya out man.

where can i get that turbo grade paint from? The thing is I need this ASAP cuz the motor is going in in a week, so I have to figure out soemthing quick....and ceramic coating is out of the question, i don't have the money to throw around for that right now...if i was a little older than 18 I would probably be very interested in it, but I got a lot more than i expected into my car, so I'm just trying to get her out and running soon...

Try some of the POR-20 exhaust coating. If you prep right, it works prety good. All depends on the prep though. It cures itself when the engine runs and smokes like crazy for a few minutes. Worked great on the turbo manifold on my Conquest, but not so great on the heder on my Cherokee. I did the Cherokee in quickie mode though, so I probably didnt clean it well.
